Well that was a scenario given to me in OAC Law class and intro to Criminal Law at University 20 years later.

Deals with police powers of arrest and use of force.

You don't know the facts so your comment about common sense holds no merit.

Are you one of the people who thinks the media is lying to you because if not, it has been widely reported that the only gun taken by the investigators was the one used by the cop (along with the taser that was used and the knife the guy had). But sure, keep on whining instead of reading. I guess your arguments make far more sense when you avoid reality.

Social Workers (MSW) do not have the training to deal with people experiencing psychotic episodes.

Ya stop using the term 'social worker' That is a specific professional designation that describes a person who has a specific degree from a University. Their training, generally speaking, is focused on helping individuals access social programs.

You would need at least a Psychiatric Nurse or a MA/PhD level Psychology student with training working with patients suffering from disorders that can include psychosis.
Even then, without the ability to administer a drug to combat the psychotic episode, which of course could take hours to days, there is no guarantee that 'talking calmly' will work. People having hallucinatory events will not necessarily be able to comprehend language or interpret intent. Moreover accompanied by delusions it can be damn near impossible to reason with them.

Instead of using live ammo and tasers they need to use elephant tranquilizer. If they can get a clean shot or maybe gas. And then have the time for it to take effect.
