Here's hoping there's not too much significant damage. I was hoping to go to Biloxi, Miss someday for casino hopping. I heard there was hot, scantily clad cocktail waitresses at Beau Rivage casino, and there are some pretty raunchy SCs in Biloxi. They said the casino building can only withstand up to 150 mph winds. I wonder how long it will take to rebuild from the damage.

planning New Orleans before end of year, being seafood fan. And the jazz. Was just looking into Air Canada's special earlier in the week.

If worst case sceniro, rebuild would be up to 6 to 10 month, pending angle of impact & level of assistance.

Speedo is right. Most poor & tourist without cars/flights can't get out.

Superdome being 'new', large with environmental control is best alternative. Newer hotels are also good as off the ground, withstand most of the wind, which is why official can take over any building necessary. But water and sewer for highrise would be a problem.

The pumps to remove water from downtown would also be underwater so useless in this case. As they have been lucky so many times before.

FEMA will have their work cut out for them. Hope there won't be many casualities. Xarir, glad you're not in harm's way. Wish all can be spared but not realistic consider the force.

Here and there
Looks as if Mississippi coast will get the worst of it -- all of which is relative. This is one unbelievable storm -- CNN is reporting that part of the Superdome roof is peeling away and showing daylight. Yikes !

And this thing will continue to wreak havoc as it churns northeast. Yes it will diminish, but it has the potential for significant damage all the way into Tennessee and beyond.

And we'll probably get quite the soaking here later this week...

Where is the Superdome located in relation to downtown?
The Superdome is on Poydras Street at the edge of the Central Business District and is a little over a mile (or perhaps a mile and a half ) from the Mississippi River.

University sessions have just started up and students from Tulane & Loyola are also taking shelter in the Superdome. As of this morning .. there is no a/c inside the dome.

If this thing comes up the Mississippi River and into the Ohio Valley, it'll get into the Great Lakes. Batten down the hatches ! I'm on vacation this week. Where ? Right on the shoreline of Lake Ontario !

BS

PS: Hurricanes typically will spin off numerous tornadoes as well.

WTF is that guy in the car thinking? Jesus H. Christ.
Some people are total fucking morons.
I am scared for the people who are still in New Orleans. I saw the footage on tv today and it was not nice.
I hope not too many people get hurt.
We can only pray.

Superdome

I can't believe the long lines at the Superdome were caused by security checks and searches on bags looking for WMD. Terrorist plots take a long time to plan, and I don't think Al Qaeda wants to blow up a bunch of poor (politically insignficant) folks in the Superdome who had no place else to go, let alone be able to predict the hurricane more than a week in advance. Give the paranoia a break, especially in a natural emergency like this.

Another thing, in pictures I saw, no one was on the football field. Why not set up cots and other amenities all over the field? What, are the Saints going to play a game now, in the middle of the hurricane?

They interviewed him after. He said he didn't see the deep water, it just blended in with the grey of the road. Maybe he doesn't see too well.

Wow, I'm just watching CNN now. Video of hellicopters rescuing people off roof tops. The water is up to the upper windows.

Because one of the fears was that in a worst case scenario the flooding would reach the field level.

The security search was to confiscate small arms, drugs and alcohol....all of which were found. Just what you'd want in a dark, panicky area with people with frayed nerves and short fuses....

The safest area is in the concourse where the concessions and washrooms are. It's concrete on all sides.
