Looks like you misunderstood something.
Words “Jewish”/“Jew” have several meanings:
They often refer to religious affiliation, ie Jew vs Christian vs Muslim.
But the same words also used to describe ethnic group, ie Jew vs Arab vs French.
Most Jews in Israel are secular Jews.
Some of those who immigrated to Israel from other countries are religious but most are not at all.
It is their ethnicity that gives them the right to a state at their historic homeland.
