Habs on a roll

Habs just beat Carolina 4-0, Huet's first shut out of the season. That gives them 7 out of a possible 8 points in their last 4 games, losing the single point in a shoot out with the leafs.

This is the most promising team Montreal has put on the ice in over a decade with young stars like Higgins and Ryder and veterans like Koivu, Bonk, and Kovalev creating a solid core of forwards. They are at present a little bit weak on the blue line, even with Souray leading all defencemen in the league in goals and points. At present they are solid in net with Huet and Abeischer sharing duties. Their strongest play has perhaps been on penalty killing, where they lead the league, and power play, where they are in the top 5. They are very close to having a contender and I wouldn't be surprised to see them go to conference final. GO HABS!

I don't know what to think about the Habs ... The Leafs went into your building and got 50 shots on net .. You shouldn't be that dominated in your home rink ...
They were flat after a last seconds win against the Bruins on Thursday, like the Trashers were flat against the Leafs after ending the Sabres run. Flat happens to teams who come off an important or dramatic win.

look out Buffalo and Anaheim!

I believe, Buffalo and Anaheim are still to be BEAT in regulation, aren't they? so they must still be on a run of some sort.

but hey, righ now- montreal is Canada's best team!

I still say that they need a proven goalie and a defenceman. Souray one on one against an above average forward scares me.

Pierre McGuire said today that he expects that NO Canadian team makes the playoffs come April...

this only 27 days after saying that Ottawa and Calgary would lead the east and west, respectively and Vancouver will be the only Canadian team to possibly miss the playoffs.

Well, I agree that Abeischer and Huet are unproven. So they can pay through the nose and bring in a proven first stringer, or they can go with what they have and hope that over the course of the season, either or both prove themselves. Carbo and Gainey have obviously chosen to go the latter route. Both goalies have been getting stronger as the season progresses, although they have shown themselves to be weak on the shoot out.

Souray is scarey defensively, but lately he has been playing better. I mentioned him specifically because his offensive production has been huge thus far. I hope he can keep up the pace. A solid addition on defence would be a big improvement, as you said. They also need a good second line centre, although they seem to have shifted Kovalev to centre and that may work.

Its nice to see non-Hab fans wish them well. I will always be a Canadiens fan, but I like to see the other Canadian teams succeed too, especially when the Canadians drop from the playoff picture. Its sad to see the Leafs starting to repeat the pattern again this year.

Remember that Dandenault and Bouillon could both be back before Xmas.

Isn't Souary the guy who was in the news for domestic violence against his ex wife?
Hmmm....If so, he must be a very offensive minded defenseman at home.

Spoken like a true leaf fan.......lol.......Gainey is quietly building a very good team, and so far, Carbo, Jarvis and Muller are doing a great job.

Both are on a run to Stanley Cup, aren't they??? Is Montreal catching on too??? Toronto has just as many points (17) as Montreal as of now. Wouldn't Toronto be Canada's co-best team??? LOL!!!

Next year he's screwed . He has a ton of UFA 's ( Markov, Rivet, Souray, Bonk, Johnson , Niiminaa ) and a bunch of RFA's ( again ) . He didn't sign any of the good young guys ( Komisareck, Higgins , Ryder ) to long term contracts . He's going have a tough time signing these guys and being under the cap
Good point, Gainey's screwed next year :D
