I hate dirty change rooms and with the only good gym near me being open 24/7, the change rooms are always dirty. I also hate the guys who are always checking out the other guys in the change room. Gah! I don't care about being looked at nekkid but being eye fucked is really off putting.

the morons that wait 5 minutes between sets of the same exercise. especially during peak periods! for fuck sakes, there is only a couple benches, racks etc, so stop talking or staring at ur blackberry and move the fuck on. seems like half the people are there to socialize nowadays. I turned my goodlife membership in because of this and now work out of a $20 month ratty gym. the equipment may be old but at least the people in there are there to work out.
Where do you workout for $20/mth?

Is it Fit4less by goodlife?

Been looking at these but none in Toronto.

I'm looking to get my own equipment to get away from rip off gyms and many of the peeves described here.

Sure you can avoid the 'peeves' but people can list their petty complaints about everything. Driving. Shopping. That a-hole at work...
And you can pick up used home equipment cheap from kijiji or craigslist because there are so many people who buy equipment with great intentions and then 6 months or a year later it's sitting there collecting dust and taking up space.

Even with the whining about 'those other people', there's a lot of benefits to a gym membership.

.
I don't like when people are chatty while you're trying to get the heart rate up. Lots of lonely people, and people with issues at the gym. Guess I could get headphones and ignore them, but I don't like how they feel.
I can't stand ear buds. The Sennheiser/adidas wrap around headphones are really good. Comfortable and durable; I wear them in the gym, and I've worn them running in the rain without a problem.

I go to my gym to swim lengths in the pool.
My new pet peeve are ladies who take up all the lanes with their BFFs and slowly waddle back and fourth down the lanes chatting about their days.
This wouldnt be so bad if they were just taking 1 lane, but every time I go its multiple pairs filling up all 3 lanes.
There is also a second group of beefed up Lebanese looking guys who do the same thing... except they dont even walk up and down the lanes, 3 or 4 of them will stand in the water and kinda bob around and talk.
Go find a public pool if you want to stand around and chat! or go sit in the whirl pool! or out side a Tim Horton's!

Well how about to nicely build men...trying to grapple on a mat (mind you this is not an MMA gym but just a regular gym) and try to reinact the UFC even they just watched last night. Lol.

many people enjoy imposing on others. fat chicks, people with low self-esteem generally will do it where they can get away with it. gangs on a street corner. young men at a gym. it's the same thing. there's plenty of evidence of this.

I remember something that drives me nuts.

If you are going to spot someone, follow the fucking instructions.

When I am being spotted for the bench I don't want you hovering over me. I do NOT want you to reach for the bar until I actually call you regardless of how much I struggle, watching the hands move to the bar is distracting.

I've tried everything. Long explanations, short ones, use of safe words ["stand back and don't move until I say wombat even if I am blue in the face and blood is gushing"]

Are people retarded, do they not understand English. 85% of the time, they do it wrong anyways.
Do your bench press in a squat cage, set the safety pins just below your chest. Problem solved. Now that may p*ss people off waiting for the squat rack, so this assumes that there is more than one squat cage in the gym.

My pet peeves for any commercial gym: limited squat racks, chalk not allowed, chains not allowed, dropping after deadlift not allowed, no bumper plates. Also people (with trainers) doing partial range bench press and 1/4 to 1/2 squats, never getting to bench full range or hips below the knees on the squat (believing the lie that it might hurt the knees).

If you participated in triathlons you'd consider that part of your training!

The events in Ontario are never that wild at the start but there is some bumping around at the beginning and during the swim.

Agreed. If you are afraid to ask to work in between sets you should probably not be working out at a public gym.
its nothing to do about being afraid to ask. If i use a substantial difference in weight between me and the next guy, its a pain loading and unloading weights. ie, benches, squat racks etc. I have my own pace i like to work at. Also, a lot of times its a couple guys working together so i definitely dont want to work in with them as i like to go about a minute between sets.

Years ago I was a stay-at-home dad. I went to the gym ~9:15am 4-5 times per week and while all the moms were in their step classes or spinning, I would have the gym to myself. 40 minutes weights, 30 minutes cardio get out.

But back to the topic, my pet peeve was my first back injury doing side bends (just avoid this stupid movement). I healed then I went back to the gym then aggravated the injury. Then I repeated. I quit the gym. These days, I walk the dogs, do stretches, crunches and push-ups by the dozens AND I'm not hurting my lower back. I also save $1,000 per year though I do miss the steam room.

Why not give the gym another shot but this time avoid certain exercises that might injury your back?

Do lighter weights higher reps for the exercises that put stress on your back?

4-5 days a week 40min weights + 30min cardio is a great workout plan. I practically to the same with 50min weights followed by 30min sprint on the treadmill to end my workout.

If I rejoined a gym I would hurt my back again. Guaranteed.

I would do the light weights then get bored and after a while I would move onto heavier weights because they are handy then ZING. "HEY Why u walkin' so funny Frankenstein?"
