1) You seem to get it with Canada but ignore that states with more restrictions also suffer from the fact that a quick drive across a state line can get you a gun without any kind of background check.Australia is an island

Canada is NOT an island. We are the 2nd largest country in the world and share the worlds longest uncontrolled border with the worlds largest firearms manufacturer.
What you said about the U.S. is blatantly false. Many anti-gun states have higher shooting stats than pro-gun states. Even regarding the U.S. the vast majority of deaths are suicides and gang related, both accounting for 1/3 of deaths each. Excluding LEO shootings, only a small fraction of the deaths are actual homicides on innocent victims, and this includes domestic violence.
Also thanks for conveniently ignoring all the pro gun countries like Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and many others who have low gun stats despite having lax gun laws.
2) Most people differentiate criminal gun violence from things like mass shootings. Most people don't give a shit about criminals killing each other, as long as there are bystanders who are attractive to the media (White women draw lots of clicks but black male bystanders get glossed over). On the other hand, mass shooters are often using weapons that were legally purchased, even when the buyer has a known record of domestic violence or mental health crisis. hell, you have parents buying guns for their struggling kids (glad the courts held them responsible in the one case).
3) The countries you mention don't have lax gun laws. Switzerland has gun laws similar to Canada requiring an acquisition permit and background check before being allowed to buy. They even require documentation for airsoft and paintball guns. Like Canada they also ban large magazines on semi-auto weapons. The only real difference is you can apply for fully automatic weapons on an individual basis. More importantly, they have a culture where guns are part of national defence and used responsibly, not seen as a toy to wave around any time you get into an argument.
