Guess how much I paid for my new watch

Hey Stinky.
I am far from old but am getting the sense that I may have a few years on you. I also do not want to overstep but will offer my opinion regardless.

Don't ever do anything simply to impress someone else.
Don't be that guy that buys timepieces and leaves the stickers on them or turns them into safe queens bc they are afraid of a hairline scratch.
Don't be the guy that buys a car and is afraid to drive it and buffs it with a diaper.
Life and its spoils are meant to be enjoyed.
Physical possessions will never make you happy nor the people around you if you are not fulfilled yourself.
Be the guy in shorts and a t-shirt and flip-flops that wears an incredible timepiece that virtually no one notices or knows exists.
Be the guy that doesn't care what other people think bc you are doing what you think is right for you.
There is no better feeling.
Thank you, Cardioguy. That is great advice, and I appreciate it.

I'm amazed how the watch connossieurs and multi-millionaires here have not hated on me. Usually you would expect to be trashed and shredded to pieces for such a post. It would be easy for them to make a mockery out of me and look down on me with contempt. There were a couple of people who posted comments such as "Who cares" and that what I bought was worthless. But I suspect those people are not real watch experts, and I just put them on ignore.

Well, I can honesly say I don't care about them, because the replica I bought has given me enjoyment. I know it's not the real thing, but I still find the color, design, and feel of the watch to be very nice. I love the clasp and bracelet. It gives me a better appreciation for the real thing, since it must be even that much nicer: nice heft, smooth links, real gold, and of course a masterpiece inside. To me, this watch was worth the couple hundred bucks I spent. I really appreciate the viewpoints, advice, and comments from everyone (except those few).

I wanted to see what the general community would think a watch like this would be worth. On the off chance, would some people think it was real? If not, would they think it was worth more than I paid. The reality was that most people recognized it immediately as a cheaper replica. I was expecting that.

If I truly wanted to pass a fake Rolex off as genuine, I would have splurged for the $1100 one, which they say is virtually indistinguishable. However, to me, that would be a waste of money since the cheaper replica acheives everything I want.

I would venture a guess that if one wants to pass a fake watch as genuine, one might want to go for a model that is closer to his reach. Like an IT guy who makes $120K a year is not going to all of a sudden start wearing a $50,000 gold watch especially if it's his first noticeable watch and they just came from a business trip to China. Not many people begin their collections like that. A SS sub or gmt master would be a lot more plausible and I actually wonder how many of those are around.

not caring about what other people think sounds cool and all but imagine boarding a plane wearing a purportedly 50+K gold watch. You walk past business class passengers and they are looking at your watch as you proceed to economy. They know that you know that they know. I would feel way better wearing no watch at that point. Just saying

GTA & Thereabouts...

Naw... If you're doing a sub-4 hour flight, why bother with more than Economy? I'd rather use my money for the better watch than a flight I'd forget. Paying $50K for a watch is insane and meant for the mega-rich. Gold is ugly on white guys.

Quite frankly, if you're married, the only reason to buy nice watches is to leave them to your kids... I'd rather skip the tan lines and use my iPhone (or maybe even a more useful Apple Watch?). My wife couldn't care less. She'd rather have the better flight!

I write all of this while I have had the Grand Seiko website page up on my computer for at least 6 months.

Just to get off topic for a few moments, unless you are going on a long flight of more than 6 hours and on a mission to snag a multi million dollar deal for a multi national company why fly business class? I have never done a flight of more than 6 hours, but if I had to I would prefer to break up the flight into parts with over night stays in between. Better to rest up before than to have to rest up after you arrive, be it a vacation or on business. Not many companies are authorizing business/first class these days. I was told by a business acquaintance recently that he flew back to Montreal from Europe this spring on Swiss International Air Lines ( not to be confused with the defuncted Swiss Air ) , he was the sole passenger in first class.

Luxury consumer goods like Dior, Prada and Gucci hand bags and watches like Rolex, Omega and Breitling are selling for much lower prices these days. You can get excellent quality watches for under $100 shipped. Many of these watches have Seiko movements.

Who knows what? Most of people who fly business do not care about watches and have no knowledge about them. Fling business class is about the comfort, showing off your expensive watch (or talking about it outside of watch collectors circle) is about your own insecurity.

If you are more than 6 ft tall and/or 250 pounds, your would be willing to spend a bit extra to avoid these small Economy seats.

When my dad passed away in 1991I got his 1956 Tudor Oyster Bristol and have been wearing it ever since. The original leather band was in poor shape so I replaced with a Tudor Steelinox bracelet. The numbers and the hands were green, which was radium glow in the dark, but has mostly worn off. The majority of the workers that painted the numbers and hands developed mouth, throat and tongue cancers because they used to wet the end of the brush with their tongues when applying the radium. I still keeps perfect time and part of my morning ritual is to wind it. 9 turns each morning.
This is a stock picture I found online.

we were talking about fake watches, not expensive watches.
If they don't understand watches, you didn't impress them.
If they do, they would despise you as a wannabe.

Bottom line is - a replica watch may be an effective tool to cheat potential clients or business partners as to your non-existent success - if that's what you wanna do. Other than that, I don't quite understand what it accomplishes. To cheat your friends? Co-workers? Women (who don't know shit about watches anyways although they do recognize rolex)?
I am just trying to come up with a justification for it and I cannot. Seems useless.
I once had a fake Audemars and happily threw it away when it broke. Never again lol.

Maybe they want a nice looking watch, but don't want to pay $1000s for it?

there is a ton of nice looking watches that are not fake. A nice watch does not have to be expensive.

No one is saying that a nice watch has to be expensive. But if you like the look of a particular watch and can't afford the real thing, you might buy a replica.
