Poverty crisis is causing families to go without food.

33% residents of Orillia can’t afford food. Food bank use is skyrocketing.


The poverty in Canada increased 40% in the last two years.


25% of Canadians living in poverty, can’t afford food.

Nearly 40% of children are living in poverty.

What's so shocking is that this normalized. It's like the frog that is boiled alive, gradually by increasing the temperature a little at a time.

Corporate greed and unchecked power and corruption has allowed companies to raise prices. High prices due to COVID became the excuse they needed.

No one can live without food. We are forced to pay insane prices because the alternative is not to eat.

It's now $10 for a half pound of ground beef. It was literally $5 just two years ago. The price doubled, and people are still buying.

Yesterday, I went to buy the ingredients for lasagna. This is what I paid:

Lasagna pasta: $3
Sauce: $3
Mozarella: $5
Ricotta: $8
Parmesan cheese:$5
Ground beef: $10
Italian Sausage ($8, for the pack, $4 worth is what I used):
Fresh parsley: $3

Total: $41 (I used all of the ingredients fully, except the sausage)

This doesn't include the egg, tomato paste, garlic and onion, which I estimate adds another $2 at least.

So it costts so much to cook at home now, might as well eat fast food. Oh, wait. Prices there have increased as well.

So....6-8 portions, works out to 5-7 bucks a meal. Btw add a layer of spinach(use frozen) and a layer of mushrooms to make a more complete meal. Fast food is a lot worse, and still more expensive.

I never thought of adding vegetables, but I think that would be a great idea. I always thought lasagna was too rich with the meat and cheese. The vegetables will make it healthier and lighter. According to AI, vegetables that would go well with lasagna are mushrooms, spinach, Zucchini.

I usually eat three serving within a week, and freeze the rest for another three servings later. So I get six full meals. I usually have a baguette or roll with butter, a salad, then fruit, and a small dessert to go with it.

Lasagna with mushrooms and zucchini sounds delicious. Would go well with the meat and cheese.

Not even remotely surprising the way things are going. I truly do fear for Canada if it keeps going this way.

Well, despite a jump in grocery prices, Canada is far from anyone being unable to eat properly. Walmart prices (per pound, least expensive options): pork $6 (sometimes you can buy for $3), chicken legs $3, carrots and onions $0.81 (in 3lb bags), potatoes $0.44 (in 10 lb bags), rice $1 (in 10 lb bags), pasta $1.27. A pound of protein (pork/chicken), a pound of veggies (carrots/onions/potatoes), and a pound of rice/pasta comes up to $6-$7 and can easily feed a person for a day, and provides all necessary nutrients (not just calories). You may also make lots of dishes from these simple ingredients, including soups, main courses, and salads. Add salt/pepper, cooking oil, and an occasional English cucumber or cabbage instead of carrots, and you end up with $200 per month: only 1.5 days (12 hours) of minimum wage work. Buy some on sale, and you can reduce it down to $150 or add fruits or sweets. You can get some oatmeal with brown sugar and drink a glass of milk if you want extra calcium for breakfast - the total cost will only go down. Buy fruits and more expensive veggies in season. Am I the only one who came from a country where the above menu would be considered a luxury living?

I use the frozen spinach. It works better. And while I normally prefer fresh I use canned sliced mushrooms for lasagna. Just do a layer of each instead of meat or cheese in alternation.
