I am single, but my grocery bill is insane.

I shop at walmart, and buy mostly the generic Great Value brand.

I eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat, since I believe eating healthy is important.

Yesterday I went to buy some groceries and the bill came out to $150. I bought a big bag of rice, some stew meat.($22), vegetables, fruits, and some other essentials. They all fit into one shopping bag.

I spend about $600 a month on groceries, and that doesn’t include takeout or eating out.

The price of beef is insane. Just a small pack of stew meat cost $22. I remember when it was nine dollars not too long ago. I haven’t had shrimp in such a long time because it’s so expensive, as well as salmon.

Even getting some fruit, such as a few mangoes, some kiwis, grapes, And a melon can cost about $30.

I’ve noticed the packaging for many items has gotten a lot smaller as well so it’s even worse.

Have you noticed that groceries are much more expensive than just a few years ago?

The wholesale price of coffee is insane.

Small coffee shops are struggling because they can't raise their retail prices, despite the increased costs to them of coffee, due to competition from Timmies, McDonald's , Starbucks, etc., all of whom can absorb the extra costs and not raise their coffee prices, because they sell many other items.

How long will the small independents be able to stay in business?

Coffee in grocery stores is insane. I can’t believe the prices I’m seeing. I drink instant.

There's also shrinkflation. Haagen-Dazs use to come in 500ml containers. They're now 450ml. Same shape so it's not noticeable unless you know. The beef bouillon cubes I buy use to be 1 cube for 625ml of water. Now it's only for 500ml.
Like with Haagen-Dazs you couldn't tell by looking at the packaging that it's shrunk. Very stealthy. I wouldn't be surprised if the bread I buy is missing a few slices without me knowing.

It's not going to get better. Price of fertilizer and diesel is going to continue to rise due to scarcity..

If the Iran thing happened pre covid, the economy could tank it. Post covid, this is a potential death blow if it continues. I yearn for the good old days when everything was too expensive except gasoline.

I have five supermarkets(actually 6, but I never go to Sobeys) within walking distance. Loblaws and Metro are the closest and on the way home from work. The discounts just a bit further(No Frills, Basics, Freshco)
Whatever is on special is what I buy in many cases. At the moment, 1.5 litre Listerine Total(regular and Zero alcohol) is $ 7.00 at my local Loblaws(not all Loblaws have the same flyer)
and 10 packs of Ivory soap are $ 5.00. Backing up the truck.

Tomatoes on the vine would be a lot less expensive if stores banned the idiots who just squeeze them. Those people NEVER buy them.

Tips: There's usually another box underneath. Move the one on top out of the way, and get some untouched ones from below. If No Frills has vine tomatoes on special, there's a good chance that the reason why the price is lower is because the tomatoes were refrigerated at some point in transport. Effectively, they're dead, and they'll start to rot in 1-2 days. How to tell: look at the tomato skin. If you get the visual impression that you can see the inside of the tomato through the skin, don't buy more than you can eat in 1-2 days.

Tomatoes on the vine which haven't been refrigerated will still be alive as long as the tomato fruit can absorb water from the vine stems. Removing them from the stems to avoid having to pay $3.99 for the vine portion WILL save you a few cents, but that will also reduce the shelf life of the tomatoes themselves.

The worst is that at 500ml taxes were not applied, which they are at 450ml. So not only you have less, but it's even more expensive.
That I did not know till now. I bought 2 450ml tubs. Next time I'll buy the 946ml tub.

I noticed this in person the other day and it was ridiculous. I usually buy a bag of frozen veg that I think was around 1.5-2kg and went back 2 weeks later and the exact same bag was 750g for the exact same price. What the hell

So stopping into No Frills today decided I had a craving for some Shake n Bake chicken. 8 decent sized legs no problem. About 9 bucks. I usually look for sales on chicken but craving is a craving.

But then.

The price for a box of Shake n Bake was 5 DOLLARS. A few months ago they were 3.50 a pop.

So, went and got the no name. 3 bucks. Added some herbs etc to it to jazz it up.

But holy fuck.

You don't have 5 bucks to blow?

I miss the 70s. We had it so good. SPs were like $30 hourly.
It was a sticker shock thing. I tend to make my own stuff. Salad dressings, soups, various sauces and coatings. Only occasionally fill cravings(childhood tastes) like this as my shit tastes good.

Seriously though that's almost what 50% cost increase from the last time I bought a box maybe 6 months ago?

It's a microcosm of what's happening. Melons were sitting at 5.99 too.

The chicken was actually a decent price I guess. But the coating cost is ridiculous.

What you can do is just make your own bread crumbs and freeze them. It cost about $.30 to make a box of shake and bake.

Do you remember 4 years ago when the Liberals and the Democrats told all of North America to stay home to avoid a really bad cold that had a 99%+ survival rate? Do you remember when they printed a shit ton of money to just give to people so they could stay home? Do you remember when the Liberals and the Democrats were told this would cause extreme inflation? Congrats, here it is!

Now add the carbon retard tax, and voila, everybody is eating no name mac and cheese because that’s all they can afford.

Fuck Trudeau, Fuck Biden, Fuck Carney, Fuck the WEF, Fuck Iran (inflation isn‘t their fault, but they’re a bunch of dickheads, so…)….

About a quarter of Canadians are living in poverty and cannot afford food.
