Terb's 10th anniversary is coming up and let's define the member's here taste in rock. I consider Canadians taste in "rock" better than Americans(European/British influence) so let's have at it


If anyone knows a band that should be included that I did not put in the poll....POST IT

I'm for the beatles...with Zeppelin right behind

I think there would be a good argument for either Queen or "The only band that ever really mattered", the Clash.

Aerosmith and the Eagles do not belong on that list. They're both "good", but neither is great. Especially Aerosmith.

As to the "greatest" band, that's very subjective and depends on one's taste more than anything.

Of all time? The Beatles only put out albums from 1963 to 1970 and look at the impact. Though to be honest, their songs are for the most part fairly simplisitic when compared to Zepplin or Floyd.

Of all of the bands listed, only U2 has put out meaningful music since day 1 till the present. Their recent 360 concert series holds the record as the highest grossing concert tour in history, eclipsing the Rolling Stones.

So which band is the best? They are all great (except Aerosmith - to me, they are akin to Bon Jovi.)

One thing is for sure though.......we will never see their like again. There is no new Beatles waiting in the wings. They have gone the way the way of the dodo bird.

And yes, Queen belongs on that list.

As JTK indicated, this is purely subjective. The true test will be whether anyone in 100 years still be listening and viewing their compositions.

That being said, I do enjoy listening to all of the listed bands with periodic phases of band obsession.

As for other "rock" bands may I suggest Pearl Jam and Metallica.

I voted for the Beatles, but I would also suggest that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band should be on that list. Highly influential from 75-85 with a number of imitators.

I do not think that the Who should be on the list. They were good in their day, but never rose to the heights of the Stones or Zeppelin.

I would support inclusion of the Eagles and Aerosmith. Both great bands and very influential in their day. The Eagles virtually defined mid 70's California rock.

i don't think it is actually possible to pick the best band of all time cuz every mood you have would be a different "greatest of all time". also trying to get any group of people to 100% agree is futile. they only way you can say the "greatest of all time" would be to look at the sales and how much documented commercial success they have had.

that brings me back to the first thing i said though and that your opinion on the best of all time changes with your mood of the day. the beatles will not fuel a hyper hard core rock day and ac/dc will not sit well with a mellow pop kinda of day.

Those guys were tres hardcore ..... mmmbop ... you're welcome now thats in your heads :) Really though, it is very tough to call just because everyone has different tastes and it really depends on what you grew up with too I think. The younger folks wouldnt understand a lot of the older influences unless they are musicians and the older guys, well the young guys stuff just sounds like shit to them !

You're joking right? Eagles and Aerosmith over The Who? :rolleyes:

The Who were ground-breaking and pioneering, and defined British Invasion as much the Beatles or Stones. If now absent from our collective conscious it's largely because they effectively disbanded in 1982 and haven't released anything new since, unlike other acts that should have disbanded long ago.

The Who's influence is felt across the spectrum, in early/present-day punk, alternative, and most every band that falls into the 'power-pop' genre. (Clash, Smithereens, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Green Day, etc etc. are all Who-inspired). Zeppelin's influence, while the most obviously felt, is manifested in some of the worst music ever recorded (pretentious heavy-metal anyone?).

Aerosmith themselves are highly derivative (Zeppelin, Stones), and the Eagles part of a mid-70s California scene hardly relevant today.

i voted for zeppelin but i think ac/dc has more right than aerosmith to be on the list

The Who were amazing and huge innovators.

The three consecutive albums of Tommy (first rock opera/serious concept album), Who's Next (first great heavy metal album) and Quadrophenia are unparallelled.

I still voted for the Beatles.

If you're gonna include Bruce and the band might as well include Dylan and The Band.

OP asked about Rock.

If the music doesn't rock, doesn't have a backbeat and at least a little taste of the blues, it's not rock.

I only remember one Eagles song that rocked, and that one sounded more like the James Gang, if ya know what I'm saying.

And that's one more rock tune than U2. Big successful MTV/pop/progressive band, but they couldn't rock a highschool hop.

As for the bands listed, I voted for the Beatles. The Stones were a close second. The writing combination of McCartney, Lennon, & Harrison bore a tremendous body of work that's stood the test of time.
