Also, the mortgage should have already been paid off and the kids should have been already grown and financially self-sufficient.
Sadly, not the case anymore. Some parents continue to fund the children’s living standard well into adulthood.

I know a few retired that moved here from other parts of Canada. They could not buy in southern Ontario without a mortgage.

I have seen both scenarios. Some adult children are self-sufficient and some are not. Such is life. Just to be clear, it was a general comment and not intended for any particular member(s).

Quick question. Did Service Canada send you the application automatically or did you have to contact them and request the form? Apparently, I'm eligible to apply as of tomorrow (Feb. 1) Thanks!
Just an unexpected letter from Service Canada in the mail.

My son is self -sufficient, but my daughter still needs my financial help.

Interestingly, it does seem to be the case in most families I know personally that at least one of their children continues to need substantial financial help well into adulthood.

Lots of different reasons involved...

These benefits sound great; the question is, are dentists going to give up regular patients in place of filling out more government forms, oversight, bureaucracy, waiting to be paid and likely on a reduced scale?

Does anyone know what the pay scale is?

Just so you guys know, right now (as of two weeks ago) less than 50% of Dentists in Ontario are planning to participate in this new Insurance.

You read it right, they have a choice whether to accept those who want to pay with the new Canada Dental Plan.

So, don't assume you're existing Dentist will immediate accept payment using this plan. Right now, the Dentists have no idea of the Government is planning to follow the fee guide and the administration burden seems high.

Insurance companies/benefits plans dictate how much they will pay and for what but almost every dentist accepts those. When I actually had benefits, my dentist asked me to bring a copy of my policy so they could figure out how to service my needs and still get paid what they wanted to make. If I remember correctly, this plan is being administered by Sun Life, so most dentists will already be set up to accept payment under this program.

That is, to me, the big question. Are all dentists going to accept this plan, or as many physio and dermatology clinics do, not going to accept patients similar to ohip patients with a doctor's referral? As far as coverage is concerned, it all depends on what your net household income is. If it is under $70,000. per year pretty well everything is covered 100%, however, if your income is higher by $10,00 or more, there will be a co-payment. I am still not convinced how this will really work but I will be getting my membership card in a few weeks and find out.

hmmm....not really. The Gov't will tell Sunlife the administration required. You're thinking of the electronic submission process. I agree, that will be breeze. Also, how close to the Fee Guide that the government will (and in the future) pay will be more important. For example, NO ONE will see ODSP or OW patients as the Ontario Government only pays 20% of what a Dentist normally gets. In Kitchener, there is one Dentist that will accept this 'insurance' plan. Guelph, one. Waterloo, two.

From the ODA; "the federal government has not released enough detail about the CDCP to help dentists make informed decisions."

From a Canada-wide survey of Dentists, as it stands now, "Over half said they were neither likely nor unlikely to enroll given what they know at this stage", "The key motivator to enrolling is a seamless connection to the Suggested Fee Guide, both in terms of procedures and fee coverage" and "If the CDCP Benefit Grid does not meet the Suggested Fee Guide, almost half indicate they would likely balance-bill the patient to make up the difference." I suspect the next few months will be "interesting" as patients will be surprised that Dentists will want to be paid for what the gov't doesn't cover.

In addition, AFIK, the government has not given any indication of what the yearly caps will be. Unlike healthcare, I DOUBT it will be unlimited. Talking to a Dentist, they did the math and the gov't is assuming $500 per person. Really? That's a new patient exam, a few x-rays and a cleaning...

Also, those with existing Dental benefits are not eligible for this program. You know minimum wage Tim Horton workers get Dental Insurance right? How long do you think all these companies will offer Dental insurance now that the Government offers it? This will be a budgetary smozzle in a few years.

It remains to be seen how this will play out.

"pretty well everything is covered 100%, however,"

It remains to be seen if there will be yearly limits much like every other Dental Insurance plan.

It is part of my entertainment costs. I don't go the movies or theaters, expensive restaurants, very few pubs. Got to spend my $ somewhere, where better than a MP for a good massage with a few extras. LOL.

The benefit isn't for people in age categories with low assets, it's for those people with low income.
