I think there is a lot of hope being projected on to Kamala. That's good, but people are going to get reacquainted with her. The tough part of the campaign won't come until after the convention.

The black vote turnout decides every election. Having Kamala identify as black helps here secure more black votes.

There is a lot of honeymoon in those polls. And wishcasting her.
It's going to be a close race. Once again about 600,000 voters deciding it. That's where it will end up in November barring a serious surprise along the way.

She identifies as black because most "blacks" are actually mixed with white and / or South Asians if their family comes from the Caribbean. The fact that she is partly South Asian doesn't change the fact that most people perceive her as "black".
So the black self-identification is 100% legitimate.
The problem with your opinion is that she's going UP in the polls and Trump is going down.
Harris has had little or no visibility until the last week or two and most believed the GOP spin that she was an idiot who had been promoted above her abilities. Now that she is in the spotlight with competent managers, she appears intelligent, well-spoken and charismatic - unlike Trump and Vance.
The hardcore GOP voters will always hate her. But the middle ground independent voters are now presented with a viable candidate who out-performs Trump by a wide margin in public and media appearances.
If rump tries to make being biracial something to hold against her, he's done.
In America, African Americans believe black is a cultural term reserved for them.
