The Star is not only aware of that fact... they are COUNTING on it! :hand:

Case in point: My 17 yr old daughter asked me today if it was true that the mayor of Toronto is a crack addict.

I said "What? Where did you hear that?!"

"At School", she said. "All the kids are talking about it... apparently its all over the Toronto newspapers... did you hear anything about it?"

So Of course I took the opportunity to set her straight. I explained that she needs to tell her friends that they need to read THE WHOLE STORY, not just the headlines. I explained the truth, (much like I summarized in my previous post), and do you know what she said? "Wow, that headline certainly is misleading!"

But you are right when you assume I don't read the Star on a regular basis. It, like most (all) media, is mostly full of opinion these days anyway. I long for the days when the media just REPORTED the news... not MAKE the news.

Huh????

The first of many:

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201...al_gawkers_crackstarter_hits_200000_goal.html

"Rob Ford Crack video scandal..."

They CONTINUE to repeat it over and over again! (Only now they have dropped the "Video" notation...

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/05/27/ford_nation_stands_by_their_man_porter.html

"Rob Ford Crack Scandal..."

And:

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201...ke_a_plague_and_still_no_answers_dimanno.html

"Rob Ford Crack Scandal..."

And:

"Rob Ford Crack Scandal..."

The defense rests...
So the Star's 'sin' is not being so explicit, precise and cautious that kids a 17yr old listens to—who got their info from?—would be getting their childish ideas from godknowshwere on the internet? Sorry but the only reasonable standard is the one the common-law uses: what would a reasonable person reading the words the Star printed (words which the Star surrounded exactly the same cautions, disclaimers and shades of possibility you used) take them to be saying. Holding the paper responsible for what others imagined is a very far stretch.

As for your headlines, I'll take your point, although they're all from a week after the event, and by now, that pretty much is a story title for whatever latest installment it sits atop of, rather than a headline. After a week all media do the same. Those brainless seventeen year olds you want the Star to cater to, would tell you that's just exactly what it is: A scandal involving Rob Ford and Crack. Are you saying it is not? They might even point out, that isn't the same as saying Rob Ford uses crack. In fact the teens I know would love to, and have an especially snotty tone just for such moments.

The headline the Star broke their story with was: "FORD IN 'CRACK VIDEO' SCANDAL;Cellphone recording made by men involved in Toronto drug trade—viewed by a pair of Star reporters—appears to show incoherent mayor inhaling from a glass crack pipe" which clearly refers to something scandalous about a drug video, and not blaring to the world that the Mayor uses, as the brainless imagine. Although if one wants to judge by appearances, those are described.

If and when there is a video to be forensically examined, then a case for the Mayor's relationship to drugs and dealers can be assembled, but for now the story is still, 'There is a video that Gawker's now blabbing about on the internet, we've seen it, and actually we saw it first; here's what we saw'.

What else could they do?

Note to the ladies.... my advice is not to communicate with the Sun reporter who is trying to gain information regarding the mayor and his brother. Some fucking nerve if you ask me ... I sure hope we're all smarter than that... right?
Won't take long for reporters to find some escort willing to say, anonymously for a price, that Rob and Doug are frequent customers. Video to follow.

I just saw a small snippet of what appears to be the video. It was shared on Facebook. Not sure if it's a hoax or not. Looked like Rob Ford but all white guys who are 300+ pounds with a brush cut look alike to me.

Footage leaked, people.

So the first lie is out of the way, he is NOT smoking from the bottom of the pipe (like crack addicts do), he's smoking from the top which supposedly is how hash is smoked

but..... Rob told us the video doesn't exist, and he would never mislead Ford Nation!

Good advice.

I don't think many of the Ford critics here (who sound like they'd do or support anything to get at a politician they don't like) would appreciate if someone secretly videoed them hobbying/smoking a joint or outing them in any way.

You missed the point entirely OJ! (Or maybe you made it FOR me in a round about kind of way...)

The fact remains is that the Star (and most, if not ALL media outlets) PROMOTE misleading headlines to sell more newspapers. They did this on purpose knowing full well that the majority of "readers" DON'T look passed the headlines. And like you pointed out:

by now, that pretty much is a story title for whatever latest installment it sits atop of, rather than a headline. After a week all media do the same.
So they in effect CREATED this story out of hearsay, remote possibilities and perhaps even complete fabrication and lies. (Drug dealers aren't exactly the most credible sources of information... even you have admitted THAT much).

This is standard operating procedure for almost every media outlet these days. Its media sensationalism at its core. The trick is all in how they word things. And like someone earlier pointed out, you can bet your buns, the Star has a whole team of lawyers on retainer to "yay" or "nay" or otherwise edit what they can or can't get away with. The problem is, the general population don't speak legalese... and they just get the headline, which is more often than not very misleading.

And once the REAL story finally DOES come out, well, the people involved are already judged in the court of public opinion and the damage done.

between a rock and a hard place
I saved it on my PC
Watch it closely and look at the head in relation to the rest of the body. It's super-imposed, that's why it's just 3 seconds.

And yes, that's not crack; you don't light it from the top of the bowl. The bowl of a crackpipe is closed. Also the reporters who've allegedly seen the video say the vantage point is from across a table.
