I can't imagine ordering electronics online but I suppose it's possible to buy smaller ticket items like readers from Amazon, etc.
Why though? Dell started as a mail order company and still does a lot of sales that way. Besides, you can read or watch products reviews on the web and YouTube. Many of the online retailers like Amazon, Tiger Direct and Canada Computers have free shipping and a generous return policy.

I will not miss Future Shop. Sales staff were very aggressive and always trying to push extended warranties. I guess that comes with a commission based reimbursement package. I also found the stores dark and dingy. Best Buy on the other hand were willing to take the time to help - knowing they were on salary and not needing to make a sale.
Best Buy is just as bad as any of the others for pushing the warranties. The employees might have been salaried as far as the item goes, but they certainly made bonuses on warranties.

I did not even realize FS closed until reading it online

Overpriced old fashioned way of doing business staffed by underage kids or underemployed off adults neither of whom had any clue about electronics
You shall (not) be missed!

Wish they changed the Best Buy stores to Futureshop stores. Always enjoyed going to Futureshop as they always had what I needed.
I wish they had closed the north London Best Buy (in a plaza with a Staples, Sport Chek, Michaels and Penningtons and shitty parking) and changed the north London Future Shop (in a larger plaza with a Canadian Tire, Walmart and 40 other stores and tons of parking) into a Best Buy. I hate the accesibilty of the Best Buy location, which oddly enough, was a Future Shop originally. I wonder if they considered actually closing some Best Buy's and rebranding the nearby FS?

Get used to it guys. Not only electronics but retail in general and others will see more downsizing and closures as the economy slows amid stagnant / lower oil prices and lacklustre global demand. I don't think the cheaper loonie is enough to overcome the economy sliding down. Not every retailer is so "fortunate" like Bikini Village and has a white knight to bail it out.

retailers are just the tip of the economic "chain-reaction".

suppliers, wholesalers, importers, delivery truck drivers, warehouses, logistics companies and many more will be affected with all these retailers closing down.

It's a shift. Other retailers benefit, get busier, hire more. The supply chain basically remains. If a million Canadians are going to buy TV's this year, they aren't going to not because 60 something Future Shop stores disappeared. If people are going to buy online rather than go to a store, then delivery companies benefit, and most of them make more than a store clerk. The transition period does suck for those immediately impacted of course.

Future Shop was a crafty business. They sent sales reps to shop at the competition for an identical product that they themselves carried in their inventory. They would then put that product on a limited time special. The special would be advantageously priced and the customers would be shown the competitors receipt just to conn the customers into believing that FS was always the lowest priced store.

Whenever I go to a BestBuy or Future Shop I'm always struck by how dead and stagnant the atmosphere is compared to 10 years ago when they were vibrant hubs buzzing with frenetic human activity.

I mentioned this to a BestBuy cashier a couple of weeks ago and he just smiled and sheepishly admitted that the store is not nearly as busy as it used to be back in the day and that the staff talks about it all the time.

I'm actually surprised it took this long for Futureshop/Best Buy to go under this kind of restructuring. I feel sad for the potential job losses but it didn't really make any business sense.
That was my initial feeling as well. I remember when BB took over FS, and told a business partner at the time that within 5 years the FS name would disappear.

I guess it took almost 15...

Go to the BB at Bay and Dundas on a weekend, it's always got a lot of people inside. And with the nearby FS now closed it will only be busier.

Are you sure? I don't see the point of this when FS (and BB) already offer price matching.

I went into two of their stores to check out *cough* Windows based laptops :(
...regardless, I thought, Future's days are numbered, crappy price, crappy products and 2 days later, it closed its doors.
Go figure.
TigerDirect was no big shock either, just a matter of time, completely shitty products and the prices even NOW when they're closing the doors are shit. 5% off a laptop? lol

Now we're relegated to the monster crap of Shit Buy and their prices and Amazon which is worse because you have to send in returns.

I like going to The Source for stuff, if it's not at Staples.

I purchased stuff at Costco before.
Really? Electronics are the ideal online purchase. You ate going to know what you want before you buy from online research and an online vendor will have, by far, the lowest price.

I think people are being a little narrow minded here, if they think that retail can survive if everybody just bought on line, and all of the "stores" closed down because everybody bought on line.

Going into brick and mortar to kick the tires, then buying on line,...just how long do you feel that will last,...???

I bought a battery for my laptop from "battery Depot"

Basically, the original battery was 150 from Asus, plus shipping.

Battery depot was 39 or something like that.

The original battery was 10.8 volts and 5200 mAh. They had other Asus batteries but 10.8 volts was what I needed and what I ordered.

They sent me 11.3 volts and 4400 mAh.

Fuck me, it's not the same. Now maybe 11.3 volts works or maybe it fries my machine who knows. There was no phone number to call. Everything was by email and a pile of paperwork to send it back. Cost me almost 20 bucks to mail it to BC.

Naturally they didn't refund my original shipping.

Now if I had simply gone to a store, I would have either gotten the correct battery, or not bought it in the first place.
No offense but stupid people will make the same mistake online as in store if they don't know what they're buying.
Had you done 5 minutes of research and read the actual description of what you were buying there wouldn't be a problem.

I for one purchase most of my stuff online. Why you ask? Last purchase i made locally in store was $399 plus tax. Online it was $299 plus free shipping. $112 difference and with the online purchase i don't have to waste my time or fuel going to get the product.

Back closer to its its days of origin here in Canada, shopping at Future Shop was truly a vile experience. Sales clerks were reduced to mere scum bags by their highly commisioned compensation structure and they pushed on unwary shoppers with high pressure sales strategies phoney, worthless products like extended warranties. In my eyes, it never really lost that overtone and i was delighted when BestBuy, which to take advantage of Futures Shops terrible public image trumpeted its the non-commissioned sales approach, moved in, and after some years, bought them out. Die Future Shop! And good riddance scum bags!
I loved their extended warranties. Buy a 500-1000$ product and pay the 50 dollar extended warranty. 2 years later when its just about to expire you go in and get a brand new product free of charge when yours is obsolete

Not at all surprising. Consider that Best Buy and Futureshop are same company, but one has a commission model and the other a flat salary model.

The future shop sales who have no product knowledge pressure the hell out of the people for warranties, guess which store people stopped going to.

I'm really surprised it survived this long, as I'm sure internet sales and competitors with better pricing, more knowledgeable staff, and no pressure tactics basically took over their share of the CDN market.

Had poor experiences with rude arrogant salespeople at Futureshop, and in more than one location. With a culture like the one bred in that store, it's not sad to see them go.
