I just had my Toronto furnace replaced after about 21 years. The parts alone to fix the old one would have been $2000, so the contractor advised a replacement. He recommended and installed a Goodman 60,000 BTU high efficiency furnace: total cost was $4600 plus 13% HST. It is working just fine and I have no complaints.

Going to add something here.
My furnace of 24 years died on the weekend. Had a guy over today to give me a price on a new one.
He stated he had some in inventory and would hold 1 for me.

The reason he said he would hold 1 for me was he stated that on May 4 prices go up 25% due to tariffs.

So if you, or someone you know is thinking about needing a new furnace or AC they might want to look into it.

This is a shark industry. Due to the ability to "declare" your furnace is "unsafe" (shut it off immediately) it is best to let these crooks come in to clean your furnace in the summer when you are not over a barrel for whatever they want to charge you. A hairline crack in your furnace letting in less carbon monoxide than a pilot light on your kitchen gas range can give them reason to do so. Most people have no clue and trust them, which is a mistake. This industry needs more consumer protection if you ask me.

I put in a heat pump a bit larger than needed to cool the place in the summer, so that it can almost heat the place in the depths of winter.

That was after my 25 year old central air was well and truly pooched, and died .

Gas furnace still makes econoimic sense for most of the winter heating.

But if something other than the fan that both use as an air handler dies in the gas furnace, so the gas get locked off, all it takes us heat wise is a couple of 1500W portable electric heaters run overnight when power rates are cheap in the coldest GTA winter cold snaps , and the heat pump can keep up.

Costs me about $25 a month more in the coldest part of winter to do that.
But it lets me replace any failed furnace with something other than a gun to my head.

That is what happened to my mom about 25 years ago. They just came to the door. No appointment. Big scam. They had a company name very similar to a big well known one. Said it was completely unsafe. It was old and very heavy for them to remove but was probably fine and was always serviced. The new one caused uneven heat throughout the house and the condensation on the windows ruined the wooden window sills.
