Okay, 1800 for a 1 bedroom is actually not unreasonable. The question is, how much are they paying these nurses that she cannot even afford 1800 in rent?!

EDIT: I looked it up. For a CCA in Nova Scotia, they pay on an average $33/hr, which amounts to approx. $66,000 per year or approx. $4000 per month in take home pay, for a 5 day work week. That pay should mean that she can afford the $1800, but is choosing not to. So may be hers is a case of not wanting to pay nearly 50% of her salary as rent rather than not being able to afford it.
I think they have a lot of deductions besides tax: union dues, insurance, etc. She probably brings in closer to $3k a month after all is said and done, and most likely has debts on top of that (student loans, credit cards, car, etc.)

unions dues aren’t that much.
Income tax probably roughly 23-25%
CPP/EI???
Pension contributions.10%
Health benefits who knows say 200
So take home maybe (using low of 33%)
$2,400
Food: 100-150 week Call this 500
$1,900 for everything else.

It’s funny. I thought the left were the champions of the less fortunate yet time and time again. Going back many years, they throw the less fortunate under the bus.

Was talking just yesterday to someone, about younger people we know. Making decent money and ……..

Rates coming back down. Not soon.
Rent/housing coming back soon. Highly unlikely.

Dude the left is asking for a cap on rent to stop the madness. And also for a ban by commercial entity, investment firm, to buy residential housing.

“The left” repeatedly has had big hands in creating the messes that throw the less under the bus…

would you like me to point at
Mind boggling debt
Throwing gas on inflationary pressures
high interest rates?
Carbon taxes

Ontario 2003-2018?
Energy poverty?

Just curious if you know what various taxes do those those with less disposable income??

The left also started the "war on poverty" which has been an unmitigated disaster. There are more people in poverty now than before the war on poverty.

This is $2,000/month can get in oshawa…………
May or may not include this/that
Food
Transportation
Insurance
Clothing
Cell phones/internet

Generally speaking the financial advice is that rent should eat about 30% of income.
So for those apartments. Income of $6,000/month

Also assuming you have good credit ratings. A lot of landlord now pull them…….

By and large we have been governed by the left for the last 60 years…….where’s the middle class? In a world of trouble. The less fortunate?
Buying vans, tents.and based on gross income she’s well above median income…..

Fuckem. Nurses are generally overpaid seat huggers. I am not talking about the ones that actually do work in operating rooms. I am talking about the majority of the ones where I work. Answering the phone is a chore.

Oblivion
Forget about being mired exclusively in the smug world of identity politics, the “left”……the “right” which is linear, not even two dimensional.
Think about “ up “ and “ down” as well.
If the Conservatives get in next election, they will have to be very ” socialistic” to appease those caught in this “ affordable “ housing mess.
What is to be done? The newcomers arriving in Canada, for the most part have the financial resources to handle housing accommodation, but are hit with a lack of availability while many of those born in Canada, many from middle class backgrounds, a middle class now eviscerated have rapidly accelerating difficulty making ends meet month to month.
Something has to give and it will not be pleasant.
The term “affordable “ housing is ill defined and means different things to different people.
The obesity prevalence in Canada is higher among those living below the poverty than above due to the generous social safety net.
Welfare was brought in originally to stop the poor from robbing the rich but now the war on poverty will result in more crime with accompanying “ justication”

By the way, the Halifax nurse in the title of this thread seems to be outlier.

Fair enough with respect to up/down, and classes. However, is that not still largely determined by policy?

When politicians moan about the shrinking middle class. They are referring to the wealth gap. Between the middle class and the upper middle class and beyond. Some will blame corporate greed and stagnant wages, others will blame taxation.

It’s both. The combined impact of increased taxation, on stagnant wages. Which is easier to control, do something about?

Ontario 2003-2018
Energy poverty and much more….And today..

With respect to that healthcare worker ( she’s neither a RN or RPN)..At the end of the day, she makes $33/hr which is pretty decent/good money. She is most likely “part time”, not full time. The ratio of full time vs part time is public service is brutal. So call it $60,000 per year…And why is that? Why are so many public servants “part time”?
Because they ( the employer) doesn’t have the $$. When you add in the cost of benefits ( typically a 20%-25% premium) full time is more expensive. And while we are on it…why are so many RNs burning out, or on the Sunshine list? Because they are working stupids amounts of OT. Nowhere near enough of them. And they are hardly the only ones…..though their unions think they are…I typically work on average 100-160hrs every two weeks…..critically short staffed.

Do the math.
That’s about $5,000/month is she works all 52 weeks of the year….If she were to live by standard advice and pay no more than 30% for rent. What would she find in the GTA…She has roughly $3,3000 ( likely less) net to pay rent, any utilities, buy food, other necessities…(clothes, insurance, transportation etc) hopefully she doesn’t have children, let alone find two nickels to save.

I noticed even a Kijiji ad someone linked.
“credit”

The top 20 per cent of earners in Canada held 67.8 per cent of the country's net worth in the first quarter, compared with the bottom 40 per cent holding 2.7 per cent. The difference between those amounts equals the wealth gap.

She is not the only one. Thanks to our Prime Minister prices will continue to rise and more and more people will be living on the streets. People are moving out of Canada. I might be on that list

I've lived in several basement apartments, and generally they are unlivable. Many have very little or even no noise insulation. The last one was truly unbearable, as the owners were upstairs and every morning I was woken up by the loud foodsteps bangin on the floor, and I could hear every word as if they were speaking directly into my ear. It was truly excruciating. Also, many are very damp and have a musty smell. I think I developed a severe problem with my immune system after living in a basement apartment for many years due to the mold, which can compromise your health. Older houses were simply not designed for basement living. I'd rather live in a room on the main floor, sharing a toilet and kitchen than living in a basement apartment. Never again.

Disagree for Canada. Even with continually revised definitions, poverty in Canada has been on the decline for a number of years.

It causes me physical pain to say this be Trudeau did a good job when he significantly increased the Canada Child Benefit (nee Universal Canada Child Benefit ).

Of course we STILL give far, far, FAR too much income support to seniors, the richest cohort but that's been covered elsewhere.

In the US, it's been more 'nuanced' and problematic.
