Forget about being mired exclusively in the smug world of identity politics, the “left”……the “right” which is linear, not even two dimensional.
Think about “ up “ and “ down” as well.
If the Conservatives get in next election, they will have to be very ” socialistic” to appease those caught in this “ affordable “ housing mess.
What is to be done? The newcomers arriving in Canada, for the most part have the financial resources to handle housing accommodation, but are hit with a lack of availability while many of those born in Canada, many from middle class backgrounds, a middle class now eviscerated have rapidly accelerating difficulty making ends meet month to month.
Something has to give and it will not be pleasant.
The term “affordable “ housing is ill defined and means different things to different people.
The obesity prevalence in Canada is higher among those living below the poverty than above due to the generous social safety net.
Welfare was brought in originally to stop the poor from robbing the rich but now the war on poverty will result in more crime with accompanying “ justication”
By the way, the Halifax nurse in the title of this thread seems to be outlier.
Fair enough with respect to up/down, and classes. However, is that not still largely determined by policy?
When politicians moan about the shrinking middle class. They are referring to the wealth gap. Between the middle class and the upper middle class and beyond. Some will blame corporate greed and stagnant wages, others will blame taxation.
It’s both. The combined impact of increased taxation, on stagnant wages. Which is easier to control, do something about?

Energy poverty and much more….And today..
With respect to that healthcare worker ( she’s neither a RN or RPN)..At the end of the day, she makes $33/hr which is pretty decent/good money. She is most likely “part time”, not full time. The ratio of full time vs part time is public service is brutal. So call it $60,000 per year…And why is that? Why are so many public servants “part time”?
Because they ( the employer) doesn’t have the $$. When you add in the cost of benefits ( typically a 20%-25% premium) full time is more expensive. And while we are on it…why are so many RNs burning out, or on the Sunshine list? Because they are working stupids amounts of OT. Nowhere near enough of them. And they are hardly the only ones…..though their unions think they are…I typically work on average 100-160hrs every two weeks…..critically short staffed.
Do the math.
That’s about $5,000/month is she works all 52 weeks of the year….If she were to live by standard advice and pay no more than 30% for rent. What would she find in the GTA…She has roughly $3,3000 ( likely less) net to pay rent, any utilities, buy food, other necessities…(clothes, insurance, transportation etc) hopefully she doesn’t have children, let alone find two nickels to save.
I noticed even a Kijiji ad someone linked.
“credit”
The top 20 per cent of earners in Canada held 67.8 per cent of the country's net worth in the first quarter, compared with the bottom 40 per cent holding 2.7 per cent. The difference between those amounts equals the wealth gap.
