I have a couple friends who live there who are very worried and concerned. They may have to evacuate. I wish them all safety. The Facebook pictures are incredible!

What a terrible experience for those inhabitants. I spent many months up The Mac for geological surveys when I was younger, around the mid 90's. It was always a cobbled together city with rent and homes at astronomical prices. Now that the bottom has fallen out of oil and Harper is no longer able to slide money to his big business cronies out there, it's going to take a very long time for Fort McMurtry to recover, if it ever does. Seriously, if you owed a mortgage on a house, you lost your job and had no other prospects, why wouldn't you just abandon it and head back to Newfoundland?

Seems like they can't catch a break, hope people banked some of that $80/hrs labour when the times were good, but only a small fraction ever do.

My heart goes out to them.

I don't think they can do much more than speculate the cause. Sometimes its just the horrible mix of sun, dry brush and a magnifying effect such as droplets of water the sun shines through...sometimes its lightning...sometimes its an asshole being careless with a cig. All I ever think about when this happens is the poor animals running back and forth, trying to find somewhere, anywhere to go as their fur starts to ignite...freaks me out!!!! I actually feel sick! PLEASE RAIN!!! And to think, I was considering being out there right about now to work. I changed my mind due to the economic problems they've been having. My heart goes out to everyone out there. So horrible!!! And they're really cut-off their too. Its not like when this happens in California, there are plenty of nearby cities that can help. Out there though... sigh

Minister Goodale said this morning the Federal Government is "monitoring" the situation, nice to see Trudeau's government is helping out so much.

Ya, it's called evacuation, which is happening.
What is your emergency plan? Garden hoses?
It would be nice to see our new leader enlist the help of the armed forces, I'm sure the firefighters would appreciate the help considering they've been at it non stop for days.

That's a good point.
Even though creating firestops has so far proven ineffective (hell, the fire even jumped a large river), you can never have too much help in that regard.

Someone get Mel Lastman to call in the army!

On a serious note, why did they wait so long to give notice to evacuate? Seems like wishful thinking that they could control the fire.

off the top of my head

1 The army should be ready to go in hours not days, for all possible mmcontingences. I do not believe they know WTF to do

2 Why have they not controlled growth with smaller fires?

3 As fires spread form treetop to treetop, why are not the towns surrounded by cow pasture, golf courses, farming fields, meadows etc to stop the fires from tossing their embers into the towns ?

4 Why are not fire resistant roofs mandatory?

5 Why has not the government or oil companies been proactive?

6 Too late now

A serious question to those who have been out there: do tailing ponds burn?
Fort McMurray: The Wrath of God.

And it's much worse than what were being told. There is very little potable water in the city and what water there is is catching fire. People are evacuating to to the Oil Sands work camps, that could a fatal mistake. If wind borne embers reach the tailing ponds, we could have a disaster of Pompeii like proportions.

I feel for the people that are trapped.
