At this point the case for war " in self defense " is weak at best and the strongest case for it remains the removal of Hussein .
The only possible defensible excuse for non-participation by Canada is to provide a " neutral" peacekeeping force once this is over . As far as popular opinion Canada and Britain are about equal with a majority against the war but some solid support for the US . The only difference is that Britain actually has a leader and all we have at the moment is a professional polititian .

People make mistakes. In combat, mistakes are usually deadly. Friendly fire happens in every conflict. It's a tragic reality of war.
Canadians have lost 20 or so solders in various peace keeping missions in the last 10 years due to friendly fire. Those people died, it barely made the news. IMHO, our family immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong to be Canadians. Not suedo-Americans, not Americans at all. Although Canada is very reliant on the United States, Canada is still nonetheless a soverign country that can make its own decisions and to say "no" and "yes" to whatever is best for our national interest. And for Mr. Chretien to say no [to America], it takes a lot of guts.
Before, I thought Chretien was a pussy whipped whimp who only knows how to bully his own people [e.g. cabinet reshuffling]. But now, after his stance on the US led attack on Iraq, I must say that I rank Mr. Chretien to be on the same footing as Pearson and Trudeau.
As for the discrimination thing ... I totally agree. As a visible minority I have experienced some form of racism before. But hardly any in Canada. I was in Florida once, Disney to be exact ... and man!!! you wont believe the racial slurs I hear. Those people will make fun of anybody. It does not matter if your Black, Asian, Latino ... or whatever.
But here in Canada, the only "racial slur" is when I am in the change room at school with my friends when they joke about my cock size because of my Asian roots. But then again, I laugh too because its a funny joke .....
Just remember, Canada is Canada and Canadians are Canadians. Canada is not America's little puppy dog and Canadians are not psuedo-Americans or American wannabes. I say this as a naturalized Canadian citizen.
