Marner impressed, matthews as well, although not as much. Mcdavid good, not great. He's not quite Gretzky or lemieux level imo. Fast as fuck but predictable at that level among other great players. Him and MacKinnon seemed to hold onto the puck like they would in an NHL game and get away with it, not so much at this level.

Mcdavid even said he sucked all night.

Too many scrubs in a watered down nhl to have this type of hockey. Lemieux hated the game back then which is the reason they changed it. A 12 team super league is the answer but that's long gone.

It was all I hoped for once the puck dropped. Forget about all the outside bullshit. Just two great teams skating their hearts out to a perfect ending. And I commend Boston for keeping it classy. I'm glad the final was held in a "hockey town" where fans who enjoy this game were treated to agreat show!

Kudos to those dudes from Saskatchewan for driving all the way to watch when flights got cancelled!

Is this bigger then Team Canada vs Team Russia?
I wasn't around for the '72 Summit Series, but I'm going to say no.

The Summit Series had a single objective: Let's find out once and for all who is the greatest hockey country -- Canada or the USSR.

The USA has become a hockey rival of Canada's over the past 25 years, but you can never make an argument that Americans are superior to Canadians at the sport.

For the sake of comparison, Sidney Crosby alone has more Gold Medals/First-Place honours in best-on-best hockey tournaments than the Team USA has in its existence.

That was not all, the fact that those happened at the height of the Cold War made them much more then mere sporting events, it was sports vs ideology. The context here is also historic. Canada and USA have gone from being reliable, trustworthy partners to outright acrimony. So depending on how this conflict waxes or wanes, I think it could be happening at a far more perilous point in our history with a far closer and more dangerous nation then the USSR.

Sorry -- you're correct about the Cold War stuff, but it was also about determining who was the best. But yeah, I'd agree, the Cold War theme overshadowed all else.

i was never a big lemieux fan, real good player, but your right, he bitched and moaned every game it seemed. too many bs calls now, and all the electronic stuff for offsides and goalie interference, ruined the game IMHO 😎 .

NOT. EVEN. CLOSE.

Game 8, in Russia, came on here around noon, IIRC, and the country came to a standstill. It was in a format that had never been heard of and the first time that Canadian pros played international hockey. And it was against the internationally unbeatable powerhouse that was USSR/Russia. As well, it was very significant culturally and geopolitically coming on the heels of the cold war. Communism versus capitalism. The fact that it is still talked about so much more than 50 years later gives you an idea of how big it was. I imagine in 50 years this tournament will be little more than a footnote.

To this day, I still say that seeing Paul Henderson score that goal is the single greatest and most thrilling sporting moment of my life. The entire nation erupted.

Were you cheering for Russia?

Oh wow, Canadian millionaires living in the USA won against American millionaires living in the USA. At least JT got the only thing that he cares: a spotlight to talk smug and look smug, which always results at zero actual benefits for average Canadians.
