At the range!!!
Yes they are.

Stationary docks can be tough to get permits for because they can affect the current and subsequently cause irregular erosion.

Don't worry, a floating dock is the first thing I thought of as well.

Anything over 100 square feet need a permit. Just built one for a gazebo, although he can't afford the completed gazebo this year. Building code requires those floating concrete pads underneath every 3 feet. I built this one on rock, so I had to go by the rules of being on posts, even though it wasn't over 2 feet from the ground. Only advantage was no railing, as wasn't high enough of off the ground. Price so far, $10.000

What century are you thinking about? They are all built on steel piles now, and the water flows freely around them.

yes, I built one a couple years ago, 28x14 and it's holding up well.

you may want to check your municipalities regulations to be on the safe side......

Check with your municipality. I did not require one in Owen Sound but did in Burlington. Both decks were less the 24" above grade. The one at OS also did not need to have a railing.

I don't know about Ontario but floating decks are allowed in Louisiana.
Once in a while, all decks become floating there.

IN the city of Toronto, permits are required for decks of any shape or size, regardless of whether its freestanding or attached.

Reason being is a termite infestation and they want to make sure your deck will be termite resistant (among other things)
the real reason is to charge you fees
