I want to try Lake fishing . Never been fishing before. Are there boats that take you out into the lake and give you the fishing gear?

Anywhere in Southern Ontario is cool. Does not have to be one of the Great Lakes.

Cheers

You can ..you can get a guide with a smaller boat for smaller lakes and rivers or bigger charters for the Great lakes. Lake Ontario you will be usually going for salmon and trout with downriggers. At the Bay of Quinte they take you out for walleye depending the time of the year. I'm sure you can get someone in lake Simcoe too, good for pike, lake trout and perch. They're not cheap..now is the time for salmon on lake Ontario...salmon are starting to move towards the rivers to spawn...

There are a number of charters that will take you out on a variety of lakes. I would try something simple and near where you live to see if you like it. If you do like it, head north to the more remote areas and lakes. They will change your life and appreciation of Canada.
Actually, I assumed as much. I am looking for advice as to which charter is advised by someone who has been on it.

Just place an ad asking for a master baiter.

Unemployed Man can put 100 worms on hooks a minute, making him a Expert Master Baitor.

............and by chance he is available.

A friend of mine has used Salmon Express caught some good sized Salmon 20+ lbs recently.

I don't fish Lake Ontario anymore usually fish up north ... shore or boat... spinning medium tackle usually with live bait but switch to cast/troll oft times not a fan of down riggers on boats. Catch and release majority of the time.

I have just done a web search at fifth wheel truck stop.

Charter whole boat for 6 hr $ 1000 plus either AM or PM

I know squat about the sport but they provide gear and trolling advise. You can keep fish or release.

I want to go as single so I need to tag along with a hired charter for about $150 if I can find one available.

Charters aren't cheap unless your in South America and Asia ... then you have to wait because your a single tagging into a group then wait your turn in line for the next fish who bites. You could spend the day on the boat with no chance and out of pocket it happens.

Use the $150 to buy a rod, reel, net and tackle along with a fishing license then head down to one of the hot spots and fish from shore .. find others fishing they tend to be helpful to a degree especially if the fish are biting and they can help you out.

The bigger fish mainly eat at sunrise and sunset, the smaller ones are in between. And dont set your bait with cigarette odor on your hands. :)

I have a decent boat with a trailer sitting in my backyard. No motor, just oars. Low maintenance that way, so me and my friends can take it out on a whim. Vastly prefer that to chartering a boat.

I'm not a big fan of down rigging either - prefer fly or float fishing. Wait another month for the salmon and steelhead to start their runs up the rivers and fish from shore or use some waders. The Credit River and Bronte have some nice places and decent runs. I've also had some good luck at the mouth of Credit just casting spoons when the fish are staging for their runs.

You take turns fishing on a charter?
If your tagging with a group and your a walk on then yes, then someone from the group goes first. If it's a mix of walk ons you can decide on each line or predetermine the order, if that doesn't work then pick a number from the bag or it's the captains boat he determines the order, preference is sometimes given to those who have booked a previous charter and went home with nothing ... but there are no guarantees if the fish aren't biting.

Tell the captain your a newbie, also the other fishermen and it could change the order.

I go with a group of friends and we fish our own lines but if one of us has caught one or two fish and another hasn't then we tend to let them take the line so we all have a turn, if a friend takes your line then you have net duty, others bring in their lines and another with a boat license guides the boat... you work as a team.

There are some fishing spots that you can work from the shore and at times the fish are just swarming together and all you need is a big treble hook and you cast to snag the fish .. no bait required.

Snagging fish is not only unethical, but illegal. I've seen people get fined and their equipment confiscated.

I know it's illegal but it's very hard to prove and I have only seen one person get caught that's because he was bragging about it and a guy from MNR was right there ... not because he was snagging but he had about 4 lines going by himself which is also illegal. Your always bound to snag a fish when they are in large populations it happens all the time, I catch and release almost all the time unless the fish is exhausted and putting him back would be death in that case its the frying pan.

Don't know where you are in the GTA, but I could recommend a couple of decent spots to try for bass... either from shore, or rent a canoe for the day. Ken Whillans Park in Caledon is probably a good place to start.
You can rent a canoe, and pretty sure they'll hook you up with gear, and worms etc...
Watch some vids on YouTube... try Flukemaster, he's cheesy, but offers good advice to newbs.

fishing in lake ontario is better now but I go up to my cottage on Lake Huron and the salmon fishing is unreal up there and the water is clean. There are lots of charters or boat rentals out of Port Elgin or Kincardine.

Sorry VBB, but it sounded like you were advocating it. I agree its hard to prove cause a conservation officer has to be there which is rare, but it pisses me off when I see someone dragging a huge treble hook through the water with no bait and hooking into the body or tail of a fish. I see this a lot and I have no problem confronting them.
