Save for...

...Springfield MA, and Charleston, WVa, I've actually spent time (be it days or hours) in each of these cities. About half of them I have spent considerable amounts of time in.

Cleveland used to be one of my favorite cities to visit...the RnR HOF, Jacob Field, The Flats, a fairly decent rock / blues club scene. I admit though I haven't been in several years (perhaps not this decade), so I may have missed all the decline.

I agree...Buffalo.....is a frightening place. A total complete shit hole. I am sure there is a "nice" part of Buffalo, where "nice" people live, work, dine, etc. But I have yet to see it.

Hey Detroit has not 1 but 3 new casino's, even MGM is down there..now if we had some good paying jobs around here :p it could be better.

I sure hope Obama gets in the White House...his green policys might stink but he would try to get more federal money in to the "Dying City's"....I'm not betting on it thou...we had voting day yesterday and all the local milages passed!...seems like people don't mind paying local taxes for things they use..like a zoo but come Nov..then they want to give the super rich tax breaks...I don't get it???????

I agree that Buffalo looks distressed driving through. A friend's uncle lives in Williamsville, NY (Buffalo suburb) and she says she has visited that suburb and it is reasonably upscale.

In a very dark place
Cleveland may have it's share of problem areas, but there is a lot going on there and the availability of healthcare is second to none.

...see, I always felt the same way.

I always thought of Cleveland as one of the best value cities in the country...much like a Chicago (save the smart alek remarks) without the high cost of living.

For most of the 80's and 90's the people and government of Cleveland were REALLY making an effort to raise the profile and tenor of the city....three new sports arenas, the RnR HOF, the Flats, some sporting events. Plus, there is this resort ara that I cannot remember the name of for the life of me...off on some island near by...I used to fly to visit friends in Clevland and that was ALWAYS a weekend stop...go early, take the ferry over, drink all day going from one bar / club / shop to another, then ferry back to your car and go home. There were a few hotels and bed and breakfast on the island as well.

Cleveland has always been...well...HAD always been...one of the few cities that I would have fairly willingly relocated to had I been asked, versus making a prospective employer pay through the nose (like I did when I went to New York...and it STILL wasn't worth it...)

Was I the only one to notice how most of those "dying" cities were big manufacturing centres and with the loss of one or two companies, the city started dying?

Guess that's what happens when everyone wants to buy offshore goods dirt cheap at walmart......Not to blame it all on unions but one of the largest factors in making anything is labour and when it is unionized labour, those costs skyrocket. As I've always said: unions only have short term goals in mind......(and this is the result).

I think the term to describe these cities is "Rustbelt", mostly one industry cities tied to manufacturing.

I agree its the former manufacturing cities that have been affected the most, Just wondering why you go across the lake form Buffalo to Hamilton and you see industrial mills as far as the eye can see??

The unions are very strong like in Las Vegas, hotel workers, even some buss boys are in a union...same with car mechianacs..the ones working in new car dealers. Vegas is going strong too--they are feeling the slow down like every place but its far from going bust.

Wasn't the union who told GM, Ford to keep making gas hog SUV's and forget about gas mileage in cars.

No, that was the plentiful and reasonably priced gas and the fact that the Government didn't up their minimum mileage requirement for the past 30 yrs (fyi: it's 22 mpg hwy and most trucks get that).

As for looking across the bay to Hamilton and seeing all the stacks. Don't let that fool you, we're in for the same here. We allow too many cheap goods into the country and charge too much for domestic items (just take hardwood flooring for example, cdn made? $6.99 psf and up. Asian made with OUR wood? $3.29 psf.......)

Pittsburgh isn't on the list, and at least in terms of the downtown core is a very nice city. In many ways the transformation of Pittsburgh from a steel production center to diversified high tech and service industries economy over the past 30+ years has done amazing things for the city - the air and water are clean and people actually want to visit Pittsburgh!

That is true of most all of the cities mentioned, it's the cities themselves and not the surrounding areas that are in real difficulty.

My comment on Buffalo, having spent a fair amount of time in the Niagara Frontier area, is that anymore the major employers are Medicine, Higher Education and the Law, unfortunately if one isn't in one of those career fields but rather in a business related field or engineering changing jobs frequently involves relocating to a different city.

Amherst, NY is a suburb of Buffalo and is considered to be the safest big city (population 100K+) in the USA.
