Noise cancelling headsets are vital when travelling, commuting on public transit or just to drown out office noise. The ones from Sony and Bose get expensive ($300 to $500), but they are so worth it. There are cheaper brands out there, but Bose and Sony are the best. I've been using a Sony WF1000XM3 for a few years now. It's got Bluetooth (no cables needed to your device) and an awareness mode where you can temporarily disable the noise cancelling if someone needs to talk to you. They're headphone style that have a headband and have almost 30 hours of battery life. Useful for time in the airport plus the long haul flights. This is excellent advice. Especially on longer flights, I bring my tablet pre-loaded with movies or TV shows I have downloaded and watch them. I also bring my noise canceling over ear headset, so it deadens the engine noise and also blocks out most passenger noise, especially from children. An added benefit is the staff don't cut in constantly with their turbulence/fasten seatbelt messages over and over again in 2-4 different languages. I wear my seatbelt the entire flight, except when I need to visit the bathroom, so I don't need my entertainment interrupted constantly so they can ask me to do something I automatically do, without exception.
I remove my headset and pause my viewing when I see the food and or drinks being served.
I personally like the headphone style because they are more comfortable for long periods of time as there's nothing sticking into my ears. Also, they are near impossible to lose because they are larger unlike earbuds.
