What are your Memories of Montreal? I remember EXPO 67, Captain Kirk was on TV. The future was in front of us.

Blast from the past. Thanks for sharing, wWw!

Expo 67 was a great celebration of Canada's Centennial year, also the most successful World's Fair of the 20th Century.

Some very cool (albeit temporary) architecture there, bursting with the energy of the decade. Most of it dismantled now, but Habitat 67 remains, still one of the most visually striking urban housing complexes in the world.

Not sure if the West Island counts. If it does then :

Bar-B-Barn , Chenoy's , Sir Winston's , Steinberg's , Belmont Park , Les Expos ... I could go on.

I have grown to appreciate and love Toronto but I feel blessed to have grown up in Montreal.

Steinberg's , Belmont Park , Les Expos ................................................long gone, and do not forget Pascals and the Allouettes. Also long gone.

I hear that it cost about $3000 a month to rent a small 2 1/2 apt. at Habitat 67 these days.

Funny, I was just thinking about Pascals the other day. My local Loblaws was originally a Steinbergs. Chenoy's in Pointe Claire was awesome; many drunken nights on Crescent at Sir Winstons and Thursdays.

As for the EXPOS, I already have my tickets to see the Jays and Mets play 2 games in the Big O the end of March.

Maybe a new beginning for baseball in MTL?

Cheers,

Randomly as they come to mind:

Restaurants: Gibby's, Moishe's, Snowdon Deli, Pumpernik's, St. Hubert, Mr. Steer, Ben Ash.

People watching: Crescent St., Rue St. Denis, Rue St. Catherine between Crescent and University on summer nights.

Discos in the 70's: Le Drug, La Cercle, Don Juan's, Club 1234, The Polo Club, The Monte Carlo Club, Night Magic, The Limelight with DJ Robert Ouimet on the turntables

And the girls.....even 6's presented themselves as 9's with a bit of fashion know-how and cosmetics, while the natural 9's and 10's were stunning, yet not pretentious or stand-offish.

But the winters there were unbearable. (Think our winter this year, but just about every year.)

If you lived near Park and Mount Royal Avenue, in the early 70s there is a good chance you are Portuguese. Back then the old houses were going for about $10,000. Now they go for $5-6-700,000. Starting in the early 80s that area and the plateau got very popular.

Ben's deli closed down about 10 years ago to make way for a high rise.

I think that the culmination of Anglo Montreal, its culture and standing was in 1977 at the Big O when Marv Levy's Alouettes won the Grey Cup. After that, with the PQ taking power, it started going downhill from there.

When was the last time you were there?

Left Montreal in 1996. Grew up in Verdun. Spent my evenings at Cheers. I probably miss Momesso's restaurant the most - in NDG. Best Italian subs ever. Also loved watching the Habs at the old forum. It's a disgrace turning that building into a movie theatre. Glad I have 2 original forum seats in my TV room in Toronto.

Not to get off topic but your point about the PQ is dead on. After several years of a federalist government, the BS is starting again:

Pretty sad when a business 10 minutes north of Parilment Hill cannot have an english facebook page.

Last week.

Why do you ask?
Because your comment is so dated. I don't know what part of Montreal you frequent, but I certainly don't have the same opinion as you. It has definitely changed, but that a good thing, yet not downhill.

It may be only 10 minutes from Parliament Hill, but it is in Quebec. The law is pretty clear, even though it was built when Facebook was a dream at the time. It's an 'english only' that is in question. The law has also been taken on in court to this point and the consensus has been it applies.
