It's Nesta's game that frequently gets him injued; Cannavaro cuts down the angles, Nesta challenges strikers to beat him. Nesta was healthy in 2007 and Milan won the CL. I was at The Pro Club and Bayern vs Milan was on the big screen. When Nesta made that game altering tackle on Van Bommel, I made sure that everyone at my table saw the replay.

In the big picture it really doesn't matter. Donadoni can call up Gamberini, Dianelli, Legrotaglie, Bonera, Carrozieri, Palombo, Colanuolo..........

Fabio useless...
Useless....hardly. He is still a leader and an anchor for the Italian back four. I believe that missing Cannavaro will hurt Italy's organization at the back. But Italy has so much depth that they can still cover this spot. Maybe now Nesta can be talked out of national retirement.

As you say, Nesta is retired from International duty, but Donadoni had already said he wasn't going to call him anyway. Cannavaro isn't as big a loss today as he would have been in 2006 - where he was the best CB. In the recent game against Belgium, he was caught flat footed a couple of times. It looked like age was catching up with him, or maybe that ankle was already bothering him.

Agreed, I watched most of Real Madrid's matches this season, while Canna has lost half a step
he's still one of the best CB's in the world.

This is a major loss for Italy, but maybe it'll force the Italians to not play that dull Catenaccio now

What's great about these sorts of tournaments for me is that I have no built-in bias or favourites - I just get to sit back, watch and enjoy. Looking forward to watching some of the kids (Moutinho, Marica, Turan) and checking out some of the dark horses (Croatia, Romania, Russia). 3 days to go!

girl who sang the Swiss national anthem at the game a few minutes ago....hmm.
Agreed. There were several nice pair in evidence...and I'm not talking central defenders.

The Swiss have tested the Czechs several times in the opening 30 minutes. Either the Czechs are being cagey, which is likely, or they're age is telling. They'll have a hard time winning if the Swiss are able to maintain this kind of pressure.

In yet another worriesome sign for Portugal, our backup keeper has broken or sprained a finger or wrist. Reports are unclear, but it's certain Quim (pronounced "kee-nh) is out of the tournament. And what does the stupid gaucho do? He calls Nuno, instead of the best keeper in the Portuguese league who should actually have been starting in goal for us - Eduardo. Scolari makes my teeth hurt.

Swiss were unlucky not to have at least secured a draw. I just didn't see where the Czech's goal would come from, but alas they scored.

Portugal deserved that win, 3 posts and Turkey didn't create much.

Wow. I was delightfully, giddily even, impressed.

Our defense, except for Ricardo of course, should give the whole team confidence. Other than Ferreira's reluctance to come forward, I thought they were perfect. Carvalho is...well Carvalho. If it weren't for the fact that he plays beside that impostor Terry, he'd get the recognition he deserves. And Bosingwa and Pepe...holy fuck they looked like they wanted to win it themselves. Pepe might be able to. What an athlete. Really proud to have him on our team.

Ronaldo had a poor first half, Deco needs to play more, he's not his usual self. Simao was great, causing all kinds of havoc down that left flank, tracking back to defend. And Moutinho! That sweet little turn in front of goal to dummy the Turk defenders and pass neatly to Meireles for the second goal...Sporting can hear the cheques being written across Europe.

I'm happy.

I wasn't as impressed, but then I'm English. Ronaldo was average, all this nonsense with Real Madrid may well mean he doesn't perform well at these championships. Still up there in the diving league as a team as well!!
