I say yes if they draw an equal number of spectators to their events.

The trend started with tennis. Gender equality in pay but not in performance or revenue generated.

Next, the para-athletes will probably also ask for equal pay.

In universities, male sports, especially football, generate revenue which are used to subsidize women's sports.

BTW: My Kallie Humphries thread died due to lack of interest but she might be able to medal in both men's and women's bobsled.

In this case they are actually outdrawing the men and have won.

And the pay disparity is 4 times.

Example. Women are paid lest than 5 grand for an exhibition game. The men get over 17.

The big one though was the men got 9 million for a 16th place finish at the WC. The women, who won and got bigger tv ratings were paid 2 million.

So considering this. I think they should be paid on both sides a combo of equal base rate, and bonuses bases on sales and tv ratings(as in how much advert bucks they bring in) and merchandise sales.

The pay difference may be out of line. I don't think the women are looking for equal pay as much as they are wanting to close the gap.

Who pays them and where does the money come from?

Do they get paid by the U.S. federation or FIFA? Is it an arbitrary figure they get paid or is it determined by some revenue pool (all or parts of tickets, TV, advertising, etc.)? Even though it may have been a big draw in the U.S., globally women's soccer is a niche sport, tiny compared to what the men's teams of the world generate of which the U.S. would draw a share.

That was for 1 year where the women's team won the world cup and the men's team didn't play in any major tournaments. Look at the figures over the past few years and the women don't generate anywhere near as much as the men do, especially in world cup years for the men.

Not in Canada. (do we even pay our national team reps?)

And the football (and basketball) in some NCAA schools fund not only women's sports but also the lesser profile men's teams.

For a business, I would think that unlike the NCAA, their mandate is profit so it makes no sense to pay people who don't bring profit. Keeping with the MMA theme it would be like paying the undercard the same as the headliners.
