When I eat too fast, the food seems to get stuck, and my chest seems clogged. I usually drink water, but it doesn't help. Is there a name for this occurrence? Can you die from this? It can get very uncomfortable.

It's called eating to fast. You can die from it if you don't breath while choking.

Could be a "hiatus hernia." Have your doctor check it out. It won't kill you but it can cause a lifetime of discomfort.

I eat fast, but not like those fast eating contest. Never had a problem, except food does get stuck once in a while. But liquid clears that up.

Psychological

My fast eating was psychological in nature. When i was growing up you were almost encouraged to eat fast"Hurry up and finish so you can have dessert"....."Hurry up or your brother's going to the last such and such"....."Hurry up and eat so I can clear the table".......my parents really dropped the ball on this one.

I almost choked to death in my early 30's(like hymlic Maneuver death) by continuing to use this eating method as I got older. It may be medical but it my a simply a bad learned habit.

I can not eat without a drink to wash it down. If I ever find myself in that situation, where I have no drink, in a restaurant where the drink is slow to arrive, I do not even bother trying, I just wait for the drink. If I try, after a couple of bites, it feels like it is stuck in my throat, it is quite uncomfortable. I can breathe, but something is not right. I do not understand what this means physically, how I am different than other people.
