$75 per hour X 40 hours per week X 50 weeks per year...

$150,000.00

Tell me that is in any way fair for driving a f**king truck.
sure it's fair. You're forgetting to subtract truck payments, fuel and maintenance.

the cost of the truck is $ 150000.00
Insurance 20-30 k per year

Fuel holy s--t

MAintenace 1500 per month

Inspections every 6 months with a repair list

MTO and police safety stops all the time.

Yep its a dogs breakfast and it will only get worse.

Just a point an article this week in the paper about people at the brampton driver test center that were taking money for test passes and yes that includes dump licenses

How safe do you feel

As I used to own trucks the best thing I did in my life was selling them. Sounds like they are making a lot of money but think truck payment 2500 a month, insurance paymeny 1200 a month, fuel when it was 1 a liter was 2000 a month and think for a minute you only get 2 KM for every liter you burn, tires from 400 for a back and 1300 for a front.
To me 80 is still not enough they need almost 100 an hour. Best thing I did selling and getting the hell away from them.
On a good month I might make 2000 for the month and if anything went bad sorry but my pay some months was next to nothing.
It's something you have to do to understand the hardships.

KINGSTON!!! well there isn't much in downtown kingston and road Princess street is a one way south, if they were to go to fast they'd drive into the lake.
My point exactly ! Dump trucks are not Seadoo's.
FYI Princess st goes east. Speed south on SJA towards the lake and safe to say you might get a few hundred bullet holes in your truck before you reach the lake .

middle of no where
some of the numbers here are wrong
insurance is not 20 -30 k, more like 4500-6000, for experienced driver
payment is 2500 avg, for relatively new truck
licence - 1500/yr
maintenance approx 500/month, which is probably a little low
plus all admin costs and rent for parking or storage
fuel has increased over 30% from last year, which is the biggest problem..

remember, when they say $75/hr, you have to take out all of those expenses, then consider that the construction season goes from May to November in a perfect world.

Some clear indications here that operating a dump truck is expensive - thanks for that clarification.

It also seems that drivers haven't had a raise in a while - fair reason to be pissed off.

But who are they supposed to get a raise from? The government? Private industry?

They did one of those MTO safety blitz things in York region again last month. It was either 1 out of 3 or 1 out of 4 trucks that they removed plates from and took off the road as unsafe. thats just crazy.

brampton test centre, hmmmmm. Wonder who they cater too.?????

Having owned 2 Dump trucks that I sold in 2006. Average costs. Per 12 months. Remember only 8-9 months of revenue.

Truck payment: for new trucks $3000 for 60 months..need $25000 cash down
License: $1500
insurance : $8500/unit

maintence: Average $1000/month includes tire parking, oil changes body work

Fuel at cost 2006: About $250 a day worked now estimate about $350-$400 day

Cell phones, office, Your own time to wash and maintain and fix and drive(all unpaid) oh ya and unpaid drive time to work site and unpaid drive time home from work site(Some days you drive maybe 4 hours for free) and the verbal abuse as well as the fact that if at anytime you are not super happy you are fired and told to screw off and you get paid in 60-90 days so you had better have $15000 of start up money every year, It sucked! You want to get paid in 30 days? Take 20-25% off the $75/hr number

Oh yes you must remeber is you work 60 paid hours in one week you work a total of about 85 hours for that money keeping the 60 paid hour average for 8.5 month which is slightly optimistic as your body and mind take a brutal beating and some years just are not that good.

Revenue: 60 x 4 weeks = 240 working hours a month x 8.5 months = 2040 x $75 ( more like a $68/hr average) = $153,000 that you have almost died for and waited and carried the customer for.

Now just take off the fuel assuming 10 hours a day paid or 240 days worked X $375/day ( not unrealistic ) = $90,000 fuel bill. Now all you guys are smart; plug in the rest of the numbers and see why these guys are screwed.

THERE IS NO MONEY IN DUMP TRUCKS AND THEY TAKE YOUR LIFE AND SOUL WITH THE JOB! ( sorry about the screaming but I think this needs to pointed out)

Yep, you get to finance these big companies and make no money for the helping them out. Dump trucking is about one of the worst businesses you could try and get into. Back in 1988 when I started we got $55/hr and the trucks were $60000 for new ones and fuel price was around .25/ liter it was ok back then You could even expect an hours travel time each day but now? forget it.

Could not have said it better myself.

While not in dump trucks... everyone in my whole family has worked as co. drivers and or owner/operators in the past and currently have one brother who owns 2 tractors. One is a 5 yr old Pete and the other a new KW that he just bought for $185,000.00. In other words... I know a bit about it... the trucking biz. And IMNSHO truckers get the raw end of the deal... and there are tons of misconseptions flying around about truck drivers and the biz all the time. It's not an easy life at all... to put it lightly... and not just anyone can do it. You couldn't pay me enough to get back into it.
