Funny you say that, 60 minutes (I know, I refer to them a LOT) did a segment on Dubai and they drove through the palm developement 1 and there was only 1 vehicle in one driveway. The shiek, emir (whoever he was) said that all the other properties were bought by people for investment purposes and were empty.asn said:when dubai's property market crashes it's going to spectacular. i know people who've bought a property kept it for a few months and then sold it for double the price before the building is even complete.
Agreed. They have very little oil reserves remaining and have decided to build infrastructure in hopes of becoming the entertainment and financial leader for the region.nottyboi said:Wow, The Emirates just blow me away with their vision and balls.
Thanx. I think it's an awesome quote but he wasn't one of my fav presidents. Lincoln is my fav.JohnFK said:I like your Thomas Jefferson quote. TJ was said to be the smartest President or father of the US Constitution.
JFK has a quote about him but I don't have it at my fingertips.
Not uncommon for properties to flip 3-5 times before proceession. Btw, you only has the right to it for 99 yrs, UAE still owns it.asn said:when dubai's property market crashes it's going to spectacular. i know people who've bought a property kept it for a few months and then sold it for double the price before the building is even complete.
Put up manmade reefs to offset env impact.tboy said:and their extremely deep pockets and no concern for environmental impact.
Supposedly their "palm tree" communities destroyed many natural habitats of aquatic life.
You also have to understand they only pay about $4.00 a week to general labourers and have them live in squalid conditions.
Ah, so I guess you're saying that it is ok to destroy natural habitat as long as you replace it with something?goodtime said:Put up manmade reefs to offset env impact.
Totally disagree. In a world where resources are sparce it seems to me the completely wrong direction to go. I mean what the hell do they need an indoor downhill ski resort with a delta T of something like 40 degrees C wasting massive amounts of energy? Just because they can?Cinema Face said:I’m amazed with UAE and its forward thinking leader, Sheik Muhammad whateverhisname. He has an amazing vision in both ambition and scale. He’s using the oil money to turn Dubai into a world class resort town for the rich and famous.
It’s such a dramatic contrast to most of the other leaders in the area who are backward thinking, kleptocratic despots.
I wish there were more leaders like him.
Which is precisely why Dubai are doing what they are doing. They want to become a prime location for international shipping and tourism once the oil runs out.tboy said:Meister: I have to agree with you there: just because they CAN do something, doesn't mean they should.....
Dubai sort of reminds me of a scene in the Movie Syriana where Matt Damon's character says to the (next in line) Sheik: We estimate that you have about 10 yrs of oil left but you're spending the money faster than you are making it. What's going to happen to your country when the oil runs out and you have no more money?
You should be investing in infrastructure, building for the future, building a solid economic base with which to grow on.....
(or something to that effect)
You were probably thinking of this one:JohnFK said:I like your Thomas Jefferson quote. TJ was said to be the smartest President or father of the US Constitution.

I don't know about tourism, places like the Bahamas, BVIs, Mexico, Cancun, Cuba, they focus on tourism, Dubai caters to the super elite and frankly, considering the cultural restrictions, if I had unlimited funds I'd be playing on the Med, not dubai......Tangwhich said:Which is precisely why Dubai are doing what they are doing. I agree that stuff like the ski slope doesn't make sense but that's the genius of it. This bold, original thinking is a tribute to the leadership of the country.Meister said:Totally disagree. The new world of luxury will not be some man made paradise, but natural beauty and what's left of it.
