I guess no one told the budding scientists that it isn't the number of times you throw it but the the pressure built up inside.Esco! said:And here's what can go wrong:

LOL.....yeah it can take up to 7 minutes before the thing blows.hunter001 said:I guess no one told the budding scientists that it isn't the number of times you throw it but the the pressure built up inside.![]()
It sounds like a good experiment after a few drinks on New Years. Good luck.Esco! said:LOL.....yeah it can take up to 7 minutes before the thing blows.
Kicking it does absolutely nothing.
If you want a dozen to go off at once you need to measure the ice and water precisely.
That is not as crazy as it looks. Quite normal, actually.hunter001 said:The guy in the video is handling dry ice with his bare hands.Very smart.

If you say so. I always thought you need gloves to avoid damage to your hands. I would touch anything that cold with my bare hands.danmand said:That is not as crazy as it looks. Quite normal, actually.
Yeah, tell people they need to use gloves, but you can actually carry a small block of it in your bare hands, as long as you keep it moving, sort of like a hot potato. The sublimation of the dry ice makes it possible.hunter001 said:If you say so. I always thought you need gloves to avoid damage to your hands. I would touch anything that cold with my bare hands.
Each to his/her I guess.
I used to order Fetal Bovine Serum from Sigma-Aldrich all the time, it always came in dry ice, I've breathed in the vapours (in small amounts) without any problems.danmand said:Warning: Dry ice is Carbon Dioxide in solid form. When used it changes (sublimates) into vapour form, and is quite dangerous.

Don't try this at home. Actually, dion't have dry ice at home.

Here is a quarter's worth:Moraff said:Well, I don't know about "quite" dangerous. Carbon Dioxide is what we exhale when we breath. I guess if you filled a bag w/dry ice and stuck your head in it would kill you, but so would just putting the bag over your head.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Please do not confuse Carbon MONOXIDE which is deadly, with CO2. Carbon Dioxide will kill you if the concentration gets too high, but only because you are not getting enough O2.danmand said:Here is a quarter's worth:
The atmosphere contains about 0.03%.Carbon dioxide is toxic in larger concentrations, of 5% or more. Most people are not aware of that, which is the reason I mentioned it. Dry ice should not be handled in (small) closed rooms.
