1st you say they would be clamoring to deliver mail,...now you say they can't,...???

Hell of a lot easier for the government to use a government entity than a completely private company.

He said aren't clamouring.

It can't be done at the price of delivery now especially given the lower mail volumes.

But if they raised the price and went to once a week delivery then maybe it could be done

If things are supposedly so much better than a century ago, why is it that the mail service is so abysmally worse than it was then?

The reason Canada Post cannot afford to deliver mail like they did in the old days is simple. In the old days mail was delivered the same day it was received. Now, it takes a minimum of 7 days for a letter to be delivered. Think about the warehouses needed to store all this mail, the people and systems necessary to store and retfieve the mail. And add to that the sophisticated machinery used to mangle all packages.

Things may be better today, but some people are not. They want to get more and do less. The government is making posties pick up mail at the boxes and deliver packages while they do their mail route, they complained that it was not their job. Gone are the days where CUPW ( Canadian Union of Postal Workers ) would hold a gun to the Canadian public every few years for more money. If the government goes the route of post boxes every few blocks it would mean that one postman can do the work of 20.

Jess? Anyway, I'll be here until about 11. :)
Sorry about the "Jess" thing. I shouldn't have posted the name from the envelope. Regardless, 11 o'clock works for me. Union rules prevent me from delivering the goods after 12...

And how many years will it be before they are saying that some other "efficiency" is needed because it is unreasonable to expect them to deal with clusters of post boxes every few blocks.

The solution is to go the way of Finland and provide internet access for all citizens. Then there is no need for a publicly funded mail service, and it can be privatized.

And you were around a century ago?

I dunno why you would say that service from Canada post is that bad. I get my mail.

Because postage rates didn't keep up with the overall costs we pay, being kept artificially low to please voters and encourage business to take advantage of a tax-paid communications network thus increasing social cohesion and wealth? We don't get what we don't pay for.

Ensuring effective efficient communications has always been a root function of government, even when that amounted to the baron's henchmen dragging the peasants away from their fields to mend the roads, so the King's Messengers didn't complain when they got back to the palace.

That's why the Finns and Koreans have better cheaper internet than we do.

I can remember when a postage stamp was 5cent and we got mail at least once a day 6 days a week. Now we pay 85cent for a postage stamp and mail gets delivered to a community box (where I can also see my neighbor get his mail).
