I was just talking, but the more i think about this, the more I like it. Although there is some talk about him currently working out with the Cardinals hitting coach, I would sign Cody Bellinger in a heart beat. New team, new league. Cody is 27 years old. The guy has thunder in his bat.

Awful idea. Look at his rate stats, statcast numbers, WAR, etc. He has been the worst hitter for 2 years now. Only reason he hasn’t been released is that erstwhile MVP and his plus-defense.

He objectively sucks.

You think a team as smart as the Dodgers just non-tendered him for no reason? They have all his records, all the in-house proprietary data on him, plus have seen him develop and tank, all in front of their eyes. They obviously consulted every coach, every trainer, looked at all the ways they could help improve him, with all the data and mechanics information they have on him… and ultimately said no.

lol, that’s a huge red flag if you ask me. And contending teams are going to avoid him like the plague.

All good points. A TAD too aggressive where typically I MIGHT tell someone to go fuck themselves (im kidding), but good points nonetheless. :)

I have read in a few places that he puts in the work. He seeks out trainers from around the league (even from other teams at times) that can help him deal with all the issues he’s dealing with. The weak contact, infield flies and difficulty with breaking balls appear to be his biggest issues.

But he just turned 27 this past summer, he’s now two years removed from his shoulder injury which illustrates every reason in the world to regain his power, he’s seeking a short term deal so he can reset his market value and still be able to enter FA in his prime, he has something to prove and he puts in the work. Far too often history suggests players do rebound in this situation to some extent. Especially a player like Cody that had that type of start to his career. And left-handed power and the positions he is useful in, are absolutely a huge need for the Jays. Plus as a sidenote, I have family that works high up in the Dodger organization, and I know they are actively trying to shed budget. Trevor Bauer is another painful one for them right now. His 34 million are really making a lot of dodger executives extremely bitter right now. Los Angeles player patients is at an all-time low.

I just think giving him a short term contract to reset himself and his market value in Toronto might be worth it.

I hear you, and tbf there’re good points in favour of that short-term contract… but we are contending next year. This is our window. Can’t afford to take a gamble on a guy who was 22% below league average in hitting last year (and 52% below average the year before!), even if the reward side of that gamble is huge, because the risk is rostering an albatross and missing the postseason.

We don’t really need to take on such a big risk like that anyway, because we have a monster lineup already. imo we’re better off plugging CF with young but established player who fits into our lineup with more predictable numbers.

Yeah i guess there’s two sides to this. I’m a bit of a sucker for young players with previous superstar status, that are currently down on their luck with past glory and something to prove. He has hitting coaches from all over the league helping him. That’s an all American golden boy at it’s core lol. Plus at age 27….The Jays can get him at 1 or 2 years to reset his value for an affordable price.

Tapia vs Cody. I’d take Cody even though his last 2/3 years have been bad.

But it won't be Cody v. Tapia. They traded away Teoscar to make roster/salary room for a better OF. Rumours are a trade for either Lars Nootbar or Brian Reynolds, or signing FA Brandon Zimmo... all of whom are more dependable than the oft-injured Bellinger.

Cody has had injuries to his shoulder, ribcage, fibula, and probably more. He was known for making adjustments to his swing, even going back home after his MVP season to work on his swing. imo that's not really a good thing so much as a player who can't leave well enough alone, and it's taking away from the other half of hitting (adjusting to how the league is pitching him).

He had his shoulder surgery after the 2020 season, but even in that season he was over 50% less productive of a hitter compared to the previous season (when he won MVP). The regression is more than just delayed surgery healing, and it'd be a lot for the Jays to commit to building him back up when they are already an excellent team who just needs ~4 WAR from a new OF.

Either way I'm excited for the trades/signings we make this offseason!

Yeah but Cody has a squint in his eye like he’s been puffing the Hollywood chronic. Doesn’t that count for anything? Lmfao.

lmao, that def counts for something :=)
With the winter meetings coming up, now there are a few rumblings about the Blue Jays and Cody Bellinger.

The guy is playing for his life in a sense. He needs to reset his market value. I bet you $100 he hits over 30 home runs in 2023. I feel like he will hit over 35 home runs in 2023, but I’m not ready to bet 100 bucks on that LOL.

I just think it’s worth a try. Why not. Cody Bellinger gives me that Goodyear Sean Green vibe.

See you in this thread in October! Please make my 100 bucks out in 20’s. Lol

Apparently, he's signed or about to sign with the Cubs.
Cody Bellinger agrees to deal with Cubs (mlb.com)

The Jays should've got him....he only wanted a one year deal. That means he knows something and he's confident about himself. He'll figure this out and he knows it. The return of Cody Bellinger is coming soon.

Cody Bellinger is going to have a monster year next year. Then he's going to sign a ridiculous contract for a ridiculous amount of money. You heard it here first. :)
