Frank is obviously a fairly intelligent guy, but his real weakness like so many left-leaners is he thinks most people are stupid and can be manipulated by leftist spin. We live in an unfortunate time where the liberal media and their partisan followers try to intersect everything with climate change and racism. The real perfecta is when they can try to simultaneously intersect an issue with both climate change and racism.
Says the guy who cuts and pastes right wing bullshit spin in this very post that I'm quoting.

Oil then vs. now- higher transportation costs, higher refining costs- significantly higher, disruptions and shortages, especially of diesel, on the retail end, etc.

As for the rest- the governments decided to use the sledgehammer (shutdowns) to fight a severe flu that attacked seniors. So, they decided to go on a printing spree. Here you are regurgitating talking points of people who told you last spring that inflation was no threat and then lied to you again when they called it "transitory ", last summer . How many lies and spins before you wake up and begin thinking for yourself?
How many people die in the US from C-19?.... A million? It's just the flu though.

You do realize I have not cut and pasted one article in this thread. I think most of the membership knows I like to respond and offer my own opinion laying out my own analysis. When I do post articles, I generally post them because they completely contradict a commentary (or worse a veiled commentary) article already posted. The more facts and less opinion an article cites the better.

Frank doesn't need you to come to his rescue every time I challenge him. If we gave an award for most articles posted to support one opinion, seriously who would win?

Everything you right is taken directly from some right wing source. Sometimes it's not cut and pasted, just re written.

Even the Star !!

Is Justin Trudeau headed for defeat?

Instead of giving Justin Trudeau’s team a second wind, the striking of a co-operation agreement with the NDP seems to have given it a licence for inertia, Chantal Hébert writes.

Nope. I'm sure you wish that was true. I deliberately don't watch Fox News, read right wing websites or listen to Conservative radio. In fact, I am often in disagreement with these outlets. It helps to try to be open minded and really try to synthesize facts without some commentator or journalist doing it for us. And always ask the question is this author trying to sell me on some bullshit. I do that even when I am in general agreement with the author.

I will demonstrate my political pragmatism in a minute with my thoughts on Canadian inflation. No one has to agree with my perspective. Most of us (other than the few who think they are engaged in some major campaign for the soul of the world) just want others here to consider our perspectives.

Since you apparently view me as the enemy, let me quote Sun Tzu. "Know the enemy and know yourself in a hundred battles you will never be in peril."

Once again the cause of inflation is supply chain bottlenecks emerging as the global economy recovers from the pandemic, the war in Ukraine driving up prices for oil, wheat and fertilizer.
Canada can't control the prices of most internationally traded goods, dealing with these forces is tricky in any situation. The so called "printing of money" rhetoric is a Pierre Poilievre fantasy!!
CERB was an essential need for all Canadians and there is no direct effect on the Global inflation. Anyone buying this nonsense is totally brainwashed into the right wing dogma as none of those promoting it have come up with any alternative solutions except make the rich richer and let the low and middle incomes fall by the wayside!!

Again Canada's two North American trading partners, are The USA and Mexico. Their inflation rates are higher than Canada's. So there you go that the BOC must have done a better job in that respect. However, tell us what the "exact" Canadian inflation rate is as you seem to come up with the total BS that it is "much higher"!!
I concur with you that Canada can't control internationally traded goods in a historical surge in global inflation. I would go a step further and say the Bank of Canada couldn't and wouldn't fight domestic inflation until the Fed began to fight inflation.

It's become clear the Central Banks of the Western, industrialized world are raising interest rates to fight off excessive inflation within their economies. (The exception is Japan.) I think the issue for the Central Bank of Canada to move ahead of the U.S. Fed is that a unilateral rate increase would have made the Canadian Dollar soar. This would have had the unintended affect of hurting exports and increasing imports thereby raising the risk and magnitude of a recession. The Canadian Dollar has already been strong due to the increase in energy and other commodity prices. The Fed's rate increases this year shored up the U.S. Dollar and reversed the CAD/USD trend. Europe also waited for the Fed to make the first move on rates and then followed.

I haven't examined the history of the Central Bank of Canada, but I do know your inflation rate tracks the U.S. fairly closely. Of course, the two economies are closely aligned and I think it makes it hard for the Central Bank of Canada to unilaterally control inflation. When the United States was suffering from the double-digit inflation of the 1970s, I believe so was Canada.

I wouldn't get carried away with making statements like "Everything is up not as a result of "printing money" as the statistics will prove it to be so." Milton Friedman is not dead yet.

Pretty sure the next election isn't for another few years but maybe these freedom idiots will convince him to just resign?

Higher transportation costs, meaning you have scored an own goal!! So if gas prices are higher than of course the transportation costs will be higher. It is like the CEO of a company stating that his products are going up due to the higher bonuses and perks to gift himself!!

Then calling the Covid-19 Pandemic just a "severe flu" goes to show how you are brainwashed not to go with the actual science but just the online conspiracy theorists!!
We know that the previous Harper Government denied that there was a Recession despite the Recession actually hitting Canada. Yet you guys supported his Government's delayed efforts to try and ease the pain. Who from the Canadian Government called this inflation "transitory"? You need to wake up to the fact that the Supply Chain, Oil Prices, War in Ukraine, Global food problem, are the root causes of this inflation. Otherwise, tell us why the actual spending on infrastructure, healthcare and other investments by the Federal Government before the Pandemic, were not the factors to drive up the inflation? All the right wingers were then moaning and groaning about the future "debts" to their children. Yet inflation was tanking to it's lowest level prompting the BOC to lower interest rates to its equally lowest level!!

If the Cons were smart enough to choose Charest, they would win a majority, but If they go with PP, Trudeau or his dog would win another minority.

I've noticed that you didn't mention the refining costs- you should look into it. Shucks! Who am I kidding? It's easier to screm- greedy CEOs!!😆 The Harper government made Canada the envy of the First World with his handling of the financial crisis and, unlike this debacle, most Canadians never even knew it was happening. Even the anti Harperite press sang his praises. Not this time! Everyone is feeling Trudeau's incompetence, especially the poor and the middle class.

Don't underestimate the anger and stupidity on the right.
They still back rump and the crackhead Ford was so popular that his brother was able to ride the crackhead's popularity to office.

I don't like to think PP could win, but counting him out is dangerous.

Fractional Distillation costs for purifying the oil in reality have not gone up significantly by any means. Refineries on the other hand that are performing these processes are just cashing in on the windfall. That is the real issue here. Look at Saudi Arabia for example where the price is still the same, and as Russia possessed a number of these refineries that would have kept the prices stable, that is now the real issue. The problem in Canada is that Provinces like Alberta did not invest in the refineries when they were making the big bucks. All they did was to hand the CEOs and top management of those oil companies involved with the extraction of these bitumen, some big bonuses. The dirty bitumen was transported for refining in the USA and shipped to other countries.

Harper was gifted a handy surplus and then turned it into a deficit. He was no real envy whatsoever, as all he did was to sing out of tune on his piano. Canada was respected on the world scene but no longer after Harper lost that UN status to countries like Portugal etc even though he spent big dollars ferrying diplomats around the world. What has Harper done to improve the lives of Canadians who had fallen by the wayside? All he did was to look after the richest Canadians and big Corporations. The Federal Liberals did a great job during this Covid Pandemic. Harper boasted about creating great number of jobs during his best year. Yet under Trudeau prior to the Pandemic he exceeded that figure in a single month. Yet he did not boast about it like Harper did!!:ROFLMAO:

How many new refining facilities have been built in North America in the last 25 years? What is the effect of ethanol on the overall production and prices. Why are their shortages of the POL products all over America as we speak? P.S. Canada under Trudeau is a laughing stock abroad.

As far as Canada is concerned this century just one refinery was built in Alberta in 2020. ROTFLMAO!! Instead of just asking questions put some of your arguments into perspective.
Again the actual laughing stocks around the world was the Trump and Boris Johnson Governments. Canada did a much better job than several nations during this Pandemic and that is why we have had a much lower infection and death rates as compared to both the USA and The UK. We expect Trudeau to be a laughing stock only among the dumb right wingers around the globe!!
