Fair enough. Care to share the SP who shares the same passion? Is she expensive?

As far as it's rare to see one on a wrist outside those jeweler's shops, maybe so in Toronto but it's quite common overseas, particularly in Asia and I am not including equal number of counterfeits, mostly Rolex.

You know they are obsessed to this kind of "hobby" when your blinddate over there is very into collecting watches and asking whether you are thinking of buying one, not for herself right the way!!

She's on this board, and I'm sure will be following this thread with interest. If she chooses to self-declare, well that's cool....and in my mind, for what she offers me, donation requested is more than reasonable.

Really? I'm not from Canada, and I travel very extensively overseas and in Asia for work, and very rarely see this calibre of timepiece anywhere, even among the banking industry CFO's I deal with in Japan & Hong Kong. In fact I've never seen another one the same anywhere, other than in the retailer's showroom (most recently at Harry's @ South Coast Plaza in June) where they tell me they might sell 2-3 of these a year if they're lucky...

Sorry for not making it clear, I am not saying the particular timepiece you wore last time at Terb party. I am talking about wearing expensive watches in general.

Still I do not see myself taking the risk of wearing a top of the line Patek, get damage by somebody and pay $9K to fix the mess.

The money to service and fix the Patek could afford me to purchase a Rolex Yachtmaster....if I have the dough and inclination to get one for myself ;)

a watch is not supposed to get wet unless you reached 300m under water; but by then you probably wouldn't care, would you?;)

I wore the Patek above to the TERB party as it was for me a very special occasion, and I was hoping to meet one of my favorite SP's for a drink, who also shares my passion for watches, and thought she might enjoy seeing it, as the reality is its very rare to actually see one on a wrist outside Harry Winston or other premier jewelers' shops.
I understand, many ladies, including escorts, love to see an expensive watch on a man's wrist, especially if they have a large head, er, I mean face, lol. You should see the looks I get when ladies see my Panerai, it's the largest face watch I own.

never was a big fan, the face is too busy, so is the bezel..ideally i would want something that's easy to read like rolex day-date 2 (41mm one), but of course it's only available in gold/platimum and is way over $10K that I kinda set as my budget.

I think that I'm gonna end up with a sub, even though it doesn't have a day, it just looks so good

PS: I love these but they are 15k EURO :( http://www.worldwatchreview.com/2009/02/23/glashtte-original-senator-navigator-perpetual-calendar/

There are cheap atomic watches available that will sync up nightly (or when you change time zones) to the rf broadcast signals from the international time centers.
That's starting to approach ONE of the things my cellphone does...

I do think these watches are more portable, more durable, less power hungry (and some have solar cells), etc.
I'm going to have my cellphone with me anyway, so this is something extra to lug around, that has no extra value over what I already have, unless it's purpose is to be jewellry.

My cellphone battery lasts between 3-5 days depending on how much I use it, but I mostly charge it nightly anyway.

They also have the benefit of when I want to be left alone, noone can call me on it :)
Most cell phones have a silent mode these days.. use it.

I have nothing against people wearing watches as jewellry, their function may be unimportant in the modern era, but then people wear rings, chains, and other things that have no function whatsoever.

Off Course I do.

Not only I do wear a watch, I wear 'watches since' touch wood, I have a decent collection, Automatic, Quartz, Manual wind. I have one that I have worn for our many years. I change it only when I wish to match a different one on certain occasions. I dislike looking at my phone for time. Cheers.

If you are really in watches, then go for Patek, Vacheron Constantin, Concord, Audemars Piguet, Ulysse Nardin, International Watch Company, among the tops. Look for automatic.

Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Ebel, Longines, Breitling, Tissot, as the next best, automatic if possible.

All others after the above.

This is my list. Others may not agree, and I would be happy to learn from their choices.

Here is a nice source for reference:

Isn't that the Patek that Putin wears?

btw, I never wear my expensive watches to an informal gathering such as a Terb party, won't take the chance. I enjoy looking at the watch and hearing the gears as I wind them up, I really baby them, lol.
As you may know better than me, a decent watch will enhance your chances, and your chronology. Decent women love decent watches.

However I would always avoid a gaudy diamond studded Rolex. I have a Cartier Santos for many years as my everyday watch, and it always attracts attention. You may not believe that I once forgot it at an SP location, and it was promptly returned. My good luck, and SPs decency. I consider it a second tier watch. However I have no problem in wearing a top tier watch that I have listed in another post to any occasion or an SP visit. Cheers.

I still have two watches. A sport watch for when I go to the gym and a $300 watch for every day. I rarely wear it anymore although my instinct is always to look at my wrist rather than pull out the blackberry. I suppose a watch is pratically still more convenient in that little way.

I never got into the status thing with watches. Not because I'm immune to it, but because I've never had enough personal wealth to warrant buying a $3k watch. I know for a fact that money changes one's perspective on things. When I was making more money I started getting into art. I've bought art costing over a g-note and I wanted to buy way more expensive paintings but I knew it wouldn't be wise unless I had a much larger income.

If I were rich, not only would I be buying every beautiful woman in sight for sex, I'd be up to my neck in the same novelties that wealthy people immerse themselves into - "fine" art, jams, wine, watches, and so on. I'd be a fixture on the best golf courses, too.

I don't wear a watch, and haven't for the last 5 years.

2 reasons, one practical, one sociological

1) I work in buildings with clocks. I carry a cellphone. Don't need one.

2) Not wearing a watch shows that I'm not a slave---to time, to a boss, to fashion...
