Although I have watches, from fancy to sports watches and even an antique pocket watch, I seldom wear any of them any more. I work in an office with computers everywhere and my Blackberry is always on and it displays the time without having to open or do anything with it.

I find that I usually know the time well enough to never be late when at work and when at home, I have no desire nor care to track time. I just let it flow.

Rolex is good, but Patek Phillippe is better, Breguet is definitely the best
All fine watches, own a couple of Patek's, don't know if I agree with you that Breguet is the best, although I really love the look of a Breguet.

My prize possession though is my A. Lange Sohne. Take a look at this masterpiece below, I just love the precision of this watch. I know the Swiss are historically the best watch makers, but the Germans are no slouch either.

As a lark, here is the link to the world's ten most expensive watches. As a pure time piece, less the jewels, Patek dominates.

I feel you dude...here is a pic of my favorite...

http://www.gemnation.com/watches/Patek-Philippe-Sky-Moon-Tourbillon-5002J-1463.html

I wore it to the TERB Xmas party and got lots of compliments and "notices" particularly from the ladies, and I accidentally insulted some dude who asked me to take it off so he could look at it. When I told him that was very unlikely to ever happen, he was miffed and asked "why, don't you trust me?" I replied "Nope. I don't trust anyone with my watches, having passed an expensive one over to a fella one time for him to look at at a bar, which he promptly dropped on the concrete floor smashing the crystal and dinging the 18K case. When I later showed him the $9K repair bill, he almost passed out, not realizing he'd broken a $95K watch! and was in no position to pay for the repairs whatsoever"

This piece looks amazing in club lighting...I'll try to post a photo of it on my wrist later, as web pics just don't do this watch justice....

I would have thought that at this level of financial freedom you should have a harem guarded by eunuchs, so that peasants some of whom don't even wear watches would not dip their penices into your women

Using my cellphone as a watch for several years. Have four or five inexpensive watches in my kitchen cupboard gathering dust.

Cellphones are far more practical time pieces than watches are in the modern world, more accurate, more reliable, more durable, and more convenient.

When I stumble off a plane without the foggiest clue whether I've just travelled +5 or +6 timezones my cellphone connects to the local network and updates with the local time, accurate to the second. Even the fanciest watch is no more accurate than your ability to set it.
There are cheap atomic watches available that will sync up nightly (or when you change time zones) to the rf broadcast signals from the international time centers. You do have to tell it when you change time zones, but this is usually on the order of "I am in Rome now". I do think these watches are more portable, more durable, less power hungry (and some have solar cells), etc. They also have the benefit of when I want to be left alone, noone can call me on it :)

I can see where a phone has benefits, but the modern atomic watches are pretty impressive and some look quite nice (e.g. the Casio GIEZ).

The Germans are known to be best watch makers like the Swiss but I am not exactly sure how well they prepare themselves to service tonnes of A. Lange Sohne sold for the past years. They may not have the scale and robust capabilities to do so, say like Rolex....

Patek is definitely a real "Trophy", while Rolex is like a Timex for "everyday use".

Cartier watches are overrated IMHO.

Personally, I would see myself of "gambling" the doughs allocated to collect the Patek, VC, AP and Breguet in Stock Markets cause wearing one of them could not pay my bills 30 years down the road when I retire in mid 60s.

One thing is certain though, it's not a good idea to blow the same money on hobbying, no matter how your favourite SPs/MPAs are hotties "comparable" to those "Trophies" like Patek or VC.

Hmm...no offense but why would you wear a Patek to show anybody in a party where you have no idea on the dude and Ladies backgrounds?

Maybe I'm cheap but I would rather wear a Patek and keep it to myself. At most I might show those timepiece to my special someone to whom I could trust (NONE right now), even buy her one as a gift, one that could match the one I might have.

Not going to happen anytime soon cause I spent too much on "this hobby".

on a semi-related note, can anyone recommend a good watch with date AND DAY under $10,000?

(I looked at Corum but they are too multicolour.)

I have a watch thing. To say a cell phone replaces a watch is missing the point. I have a Rolex SS sub and I just got myself a Bell&Ross instrument for christmas. Watches are the only form of bling a guy can wear without looking like a moron.

Sure whatever makes you happy given that age.;)

But, if I ever accumulate that kind of dough after paying my mortgages and bills, I would not collect more than 7 of those "trophy" watches since it's a hassle to service those once in every 5 years.

Plus, I get other priority than collecting those "badges/honors", say money to charities that fight for the cause while keeping the admin cost less than 9 % annually.

Don't wear one on a daily basis anymore. The phone is more handy.

But will wear a "show off" piece on social occasions or to impress clients.

As someone noted : it's still one of the only few ways left for a guy to preen himself with class.

But unlike those charities you could not fill in Schedule 9 on your tax returns for supporting those young women.

At best, you could pay by credit card but there's a surcharge and under no circumstances I put FICO at risk, even though knowing well I would pay all the outstanding balance before cut-off and earn tonnes of rewards/cash backs in the process.

BTW, it makes me sick when you get more bang for the buck taxation wise by contributing to Tories/Fiberals/NDP, aka Communists than helping those really in need. Many of those politicans are the same group of people who think they have higher moral grounds compare to "young women who are trying to make it in this cruel world".

I don't think they think so. They ought to be smart enough to know that they are whores.

No offense taken. First off, I just wear my watches for me as they give me a lot of pleasure just by looking at them; I don't actually try to parade them publicly to deliberately gain attention. Second, most of my very high end pieces are fully insured against theft and damage, so that's not a real concern, and if push comes to shove, I'm a pretty capable guy in terms of defending the homestead, so to speak. That said, I don't put the pieces deliberately in harm's way either. I wore the Patek above to the TERB party as it was for me a very special occasion, and I was hoping to meet one of my favorite SP's for a drink, who also shares my passion for watches, and thought she might enjoy seeing it, as the reality is its very rare to actually see one on a wrist outside Harry Winston or other premier jewelers' shops.

Just like many CEOs of publicly traded companies, the politicians are known to be cheerleaders of whatever causes they have convictions, not necessarily having street smart and common sense. He or she must be approachable and lovable by the Lobbyists.

Otherwise, why would almost everything at Queen's Park, the City Hall and in Ottawa are in deadlock, just like the Capitol Hill in DC?

Now back to the original topic.

Fair enough. Care to share the SP who shares the same passion? Is she expensive?

As far as it's rare to see one on a wrist outside those jeweler's shops, maybe so in Toronto but it's quite common overseas, particularly in Asia and I am not including equal number of counterfeits, mostly Rolex. ;)

You know they are obsessed to this kind of "hobby" when your blinddate over there is very into collecting watches and asking whether you are thinking of buying one, not for herself right the way!!
