Since everyone seemed to have written off the Leafs after they tied Ottawa twice and lost to Montreal by one goal do they still feel the same after they Leafs beat both the Flyers and the Thrashers?

HELLO! We are only five games into the season, sheesh. Toronto has the potential, despite their defense(sucks big time, that is another thread). 20 to 25 games into the season and barring major injuries to 2 or 3 of the big guns, IF they are still there then maybe. I am sure they still put a scare into any of the so called favourites Ottawa included. Go Leafs Go.

I am in no way a Leaf fan but have to side with A-Rod on this one.

5 games in. Can't say. We will know by Xmas who has potential to go all the way.

Buffalo is a good example but inverted. They are playing well right now but it is too soon to satrt taping the ankles for getting on that Bandwagon.

I am a Flyer fan and am taking a patient wait and see attitude.

i don't know if you could even tell by then... if you could, you'd make alot of $$$ on proline.

Leafs don't suck at all. In fact, the whole league is better balanced this year...now, it will be up to the team that can gel with the best chemistry and leadership. the leafs have this, but they have alot of work to do. No team has ever won the Stanley Cup getting outshot on average 34 to 25. The leafs average shots for per game this year is 25.2(would've been only 21 hadn't they had 34 shots against Atlanta). The leagues average is 33.7. So that puts them against all odds of having any hopes of doing serious damage this year under the way they currently play.

so you're judging how well they will do based on shots on goal?

EEEE

if you score 20% of the time, who cares how many shots against you have, if you have a solid keeper...

Do you know this for a fact? Please tell us the worst shots for and against spread that a team has won a cup with so we have something to compare against.

Can you back up that first sentence?

Anyway, it's still WAAAAY too early to be looking seriously at shot totals and extrapolating them over 80-odd games. Way too early.

stay healthy

IMHO.

For the leafs more so than most teams, its critical that they stay healthy( particularly on the blueline). If one of either McCabe or Karberle goes down they are totally screwed. When the Leafs are healthy they are a top end team. The challenge is they have so many guys with a history of injuries.

now they have put a few good games together is the time. if they start losing again then they will want to keep him. i say lose the bum now and his too big salary for todays game. get the leafs a goalie that we can use for a few more years, and maybe a defenceman as well.

sundins 6.5 million will but some pretty good players....now.

yeah, i can compile the stats. give me a bit to do so. i'll post'em in this thread.

but as for what i said previously... i do know from coaching that teams do not have success in the playoffs unless they outshoot the opponent, generally speaking, meaning playing strong enough defensive coverage.

ok...

for all you skeptics, i pulled out my 2002 edition of NHL's History of the Stanley Cup... lucky for me, it has each game's stats.

the hard part was sorting through all of the games through 75 years of stanley cup hockey in the nhl and writing down the shots of each and every team that made the finals.

the easy part was that only a few series ended with the losing team outshooting the winners:

NJ won the cup over Dallas in 2000, but average shots for NJ per game was 27.4 and Dallas averaged 34 shots per game.

in 1989, when the Flames won over Montreal, they were outshot on per game average 30 to 32.

1984 the Oilers won over NYI, yet was outshot on average 38.1 to 35.2

1983 the NYI won over Oilers, yet was outshot on average 34.7 to 34.2

so far, i have looked back as far as 1974. haven't got to where the leafs have won anything, yet!

i looked at 30 years of stanley cup history and only 4 times did the winning team get outshot on average. but, mind you, this is only the stanley cup finals... chances are NJ, Calgary, Edmonton and New York, probably outshot there earlier playoff oponents in their respective winning years....

also, the shot differencials are very narrow. i still don't think that you will find a comparable to that awesome leaf stat of getting outshot on average 34 to 25.(one to be proud of surely)

also, i still stand to say that you won't win Lord Stanley getting outshot consistently.
