Is it true that there is a penalty to not fill it out?
I heard an interview on 680 news yesterday in which the reporter stated that the fine for not completing the Census is up to three months in jail / $500 fine.
I've looked on Stats Canada's site and never saw mention of this...

I'm sure that many years ago the census was a good way to measure the population trends, and allow the government to plan for the future growth of the country. In today's highly piliticised environment, however, you can only assume that governments of all stripes will mine this information in order to plow money into areas where they can achieve political pay-back.
If we assume that a good census provides government with the information to create programs where they are needed, what study did they do that indicated that Quebec advertising executives required further funding?
Whereas I once was happy to forward my census data when asked, I am now sceptical as to how this information will be used and to what ends they will use this data to send money to those who have influence (read political cronies etc.).
Just another product of too many years of political corruption leading to a cynical attitude among the great unwashed.
That's my two cents worth...

If you do not fill it in, then you have not given your consent. I do not believe that you can be penalized for not consenting to a process that requires your consent to penalize you.
Moreover, since these statistics will not be made public for 92 years or so, then any constitutional abirdgements of those in vogue in 2006 should not be of great concern to anyone who has not discovered the elixer of life.

It is too bad that such intrusions into our private lives could not generate larger questions.

Interesting info about the census.
I filled mine out so that it could not be read by the scanning machines and must be manually entered. Also wrote in the comments that our tax dollars should go to Stats Can workers instead of Lockheed Martin which is one of the largest makers of weapons of mass destruction. Lockheed has a contract for the software that is used online.
I don't know how private our infor will be with our big brother to the south of uss spying in.

takes maybe 5 minutes and is painless,the hardest part was getting the access number as we did not get the census in the mail.
For those that havent done it yet, in case you didnt know, you can still do it. Bud did his last night. Guess he had the short 1, only a few basic questions.
