No, I think all intelligent people understand why we are happy to stop at red lights. However, if you don't think that governments take polls to find out what people are thinking so that they can throw money at whatever special interest group might be inclined to vote for a given party, then why do they spend all that money on polling? A census is the only poll that you can't opt out from. It's the Mother of All Polls!
Don't be so naieve to believe that government is only here to provide sober management of the country's business. Everything is political and the data from the census will drive much of the pork barrel spending in the years to come. Once they know the exact numbers for minority, religious and regional trends, they'll know where the votes can be bought (with your money).
If you don'y understand that, then I'm the guy whose rolling his eyes.
