I disagree.

Let anyone say anything, let the oxygen of evidence, logic, and reasoning, fairness and common sense overcome lies.

You are allowing the government to determine what is true. Do you really not see how dangerous that is?

Truth cannot be voted on, or pronounced, or be reserved to be the ipse dixit of the reigning powers that be.

Implicit in democracy is the right to hear all points of view. In democracy, you TRUST the people to eventually make the right choice.

Isn’t it the worst thing about democracy though considering how dumb and brainwashed people are and how it gets even worse with proliferation of internet?

No, not at all. Who decides who is dumb and brainwashed? Why government?

A government is nothing but a collection of individuals, who, WORSE than citizens, are beholden to people to get elected/re-elected.

Eventually, they are not impartial, they begin to take action that benefits their hold on power. I don't see how that can be disputed, if one is at all a student of history.

Or they could be from one particular religious majority. They will stay in power if they continually appease their majority base if they promote their religion, through blasphemy laws etc. Pakistan.

Why can't I say that I consider talk of Allah, Jesus, Siddhartha Gautama , Lord Ram, Ron Hubbard as blasphemous to me because I might believe them all to be false or at least misleading?

I would say that the people of Russia right now are somewhat brainwashed. Their government has the power to not only say what is true, but to jail those who have a different opinion.

You may say, "Oh c'mon, we are not Russia."

I say, "No, not yet, but you BECOME like Russia or other totalitarian regimes by allowing this kind of creeping state control to gain ground."

It pains me to say this but many Canadians are not intelligent nor rational enough to understand history and are vulnerable to brainwashing.

Yes, I understand free speech, I understand hate speech and I also understand virtual signalling/cancel culture (especially those lefties pushing their agenda on the rest of us).

Question: How can any intelligent and rational person person deny the Holocaust happened?

Maybe I'll do a poll even though I don't consider TERB to be the centre of the Canadian universe.

Making trolling illegal is giving the trolls exactly the attention they crave. They’ll now move on to a new crazy topic and keep trolling you.

I agree with you on this one. Truly a slippery slope.

In this particular case are they wrong that the Holocaust occurred?
Oh, I believe the Holocaust occurred, that is not the issue. The issue is why do we need to make things we consider untrue to be made illegal?

And who decides? And what if they are wrong? And what if they use this to create a totalitarian regime?

Every totalitarian regime in the world restricts free speech, and not for the benefit of truth, but for the benefit of power.

Their power inevitably is coercive, and means the loss of individual freedoms.

Who cares how a person can come to that conclusion? There are zillions of patently wrong beliefs out there.

Ironically, the instigators of the holocaust, the Nazis, certainly did not believe in free speech.

"When the Nazis came to power in 1933, the German constitution guaranteed freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Through decrees and laws, the Nazis abolished these civil rights and destroyed German democracy. Starting in 1934, it was illegal to criticize the Nazi government. Even telling a joke about Hitler was considered treachery."

Once you allow this kind of censorship, good luck restraining it, once a ruthless ruler gets in power.

And one eventually always does.

Meanwhile the German penal code prohibits publicly denying the Holocaust and disseminating Nazi propaganda, both off- and online. This includes sharing images such as swastikas, wearing an SS uniform and making statements in support of Hitler.

is Germany more fucked up than USA where you can run your mouth to your heart content?

As usual, the Supreme Court of Canada will decide this.

I do not agree with censorship of this case but when words are used to engender hate against a particular and defined group it transcends just a censorship issue. It may become an issue of public safety.
