You're in the food court at the Eaton Centre. Men with guns from both sides approach screaming for everyone to get down on the ground. There is no escape route for anyone in the food court. The men go around asking people on the ground "Are you Muslim or Christian"? People that reply "Christian" or "non-religious" are shot dead on the spot.

This happened in a busy mall in Africa a few years ago.

What will your answer be? If you say "Muslim" they might test your knowledge.

Lesson: learn about the Koran today. It could save your life.

GTA & Thereabouts...
Not to get all dramatic, but I'd rather be known for trying to fight and getting shot rather than knowing verses in the Koran and peeing my pants. I've accomplished my goals and made my mistakes; at this point I'm just paying bills and waiting to retire.

I have zero free time to learn about religion, however I'll make time to watch a good action movie.

If you are travelling overseas to places known to be
not too safe from terrorist taking hostage of
tourists one insurance against
being killed is holding a non-US passport. A rudimentary
knowledge of the Koran could come to your rescue
if the terrorist was to kill only non-Muslims. On second
thought maybe holding a Canadian passport isn't any
safer than holding a U.S. passport in light of our government's
high profile 'rescue' of that Saudi teen. Surely if that teen
would need 24 hr security of a bodyguard the terrorist
won't likely spare the lives of the citizens of her host country.

This is so silly but I will play.

1st of all I don’t think people realize what will happen to them in a situation like this.

You will go into shock, you might start shaking trembling and in no way will you be able to function and think normal like you do now.

Some people will do what it takes to stay alive under severe mental impairment. Many will just freeze up, some will have the ability to say what they need to try and stay alive and very few will try to attack them.

When I was faced with such situation (guns shooting, perceived threat of immediate death) as a pre teen I froze and was shaking uncontrollably. In OPs situation I’d like to think I would try and fight back since I am going to die anyways. I don’t think it would be like in the movies where they start grouping people. Stuff like this happens in fractions of a second to seconds and minutes. They will either believe you or not and take their action.

Best solution is just don’t go to high risk countries where this happens on the regular and minimize your risk.

This is why everyone should be carrying a gun. Fifty people can turn around and shoot their asses. All of a sudden any further attackers are going to think twice.

No, because as Rain said, your average person isn’t trained to handle the pressure of a combat situation. They’re going to freeze up, go into shock, have an adrenaline dump, get tunnel vision, and if they do start shooting, there’s a good chance they’ll wind up killing innocent bystanders. Adding more panicky idiots with guns is not going to improve the situation. Plus, it’ll make things harder when the police show up, because now there are multiple shooters and they don’t know who the good guys and bad guys are. Odds are pretty good that the “good guys” will wind up getting shot by the police.

You better have good knowledge of Islam if you are going that rout.

Realistically everyone will react different, and will act on pure instincts when the situation takes place.

1) take a self defence course gear towards terrorist threats.

2) if you cant afford to take the course. Watch as many videos of terrorist attacts, look at the mistakes the terrorist made, then imagine scenarios, to get out.

But above all remember you are facing a monster, and the only way to beat that monster is by being a much more dangerous monster.

If I had a nickel for every time I worried about stuff like this I'd still be broke.

However, to play your silly game, IF this 20 billion to 1 scenario came up I'd have to say;
The food is crap and the atmosphere is depressing. Shoot me now or rescue me. Please!!!

Yeah, this has worked so well in the U.S. where there are hardly any mass shootings... (if I could find the eye-rolls emoticon, I'd insert it here)

We recently had a member of the OPP visit our workplace and talk about being prepared to face an active shooter. There are numerous videos on youtube which cover this scenario.

There are usually three things one can do in this situation - Run, hide or fight.

A little training for these types of situations goes a long way in the event something happens. And before you say it will never happen at your workplace or grocery store...

I agree. But I really don't care if 50 people can turn around and shoot the attackers. I just care that I can.

According to posters here, the mere consideration of this scenario is a "silly game". Incredible that OPP would visit a workplace to explain actions to take if such an event occurred.
