After my umpteenth close call on the 401 I'm finally breaking down and ordering a dash cam. Some guy in the left lane decided to cut right across all the lanes of traffic suddenly to make his exit and nearly took me out. The dash cam wouldn't have prevented the crash, but at least there would be the evidence. Also am now strangely addicted to all the dash cam videos on Youtube. I think it's worth a few hundred dollar investment for some protection.
You don't need to spend a few hundred bucks. Easily under $100 on amazon will get you a perfectly good dash cam satisfactory to prove who was at fault.
AFAIK, none of the dash cams under $500 can reliably read a license plate, especially at night.
All you want is something to show what happened. And if it was your fault, just tuck the SD card into your pocket and act surprised if the cop asks about your dash cam. Not that cops show up anymore anyways.
Form factor is a factor for me. I like the small ones that can swivel towards your window in case you get pulled over by the police. That way you have your own recording of the encounter.
I got this one from Amazon for $50.
Also, make sure you get a "High Endurance" MicroSD card as it may be overwritten thousands of times due to the looping/overwrite use of the memory card.
I'm going to get a separate rear view cam also since there are scammers and bad drivers that the cam can save your insurance premium if you are in accident involving one. Or scammers.
For that, I'm looking for a low profile style.
There are also ones that show the front, sides, rear and interior like this one for $139 on amazon
