I had a dancer in my car last night, driving her and a mutual friend back to her place about 1 am last night. Driving along Matheson and my cell phone rang. The law has changed and driving without a handsfree is technically illegal, so I pulled onto a side street and stopped to take the call.

Not 45 seconds into the call, a Peel Regional cruiser comes up and the lights go on.

I get off the phone, out of the car and walk back to the cruiser to see what the issue is. The cops bounces out of the car, had on his weapon and orders me back to my car. I very nicely ask again, what is the problem and I am again told to return to my car. After I get back into the car, the cop approaches and demands all the paperwork. Again, I ask why I am being stopped. He once more demands my license etc. I hand it over and he asks why I am stopped. I tell him that the phone rang and I wanted to take the call without driving.

Cop looks at me and wanders back to the cruiser. He comes back and starts the 20 question game, where were you, where are you going, were you drinking, how was the food blah blah blah.

If I am going to have to report to the Peel Regional Police every damn time I get a phone call, I will be pissed.

Oh, and the cops justification for all the drama? He just wanted to know if I needed any help.

Other than giving name, proper ID & paperwork & possibly a question or 2 & a breathalyzer to prove against DUI I reccomend the 5 word rule:

"I have nothing to say"

It is illegal..Period.

Haven't you seen those billboards where one guys says "it costed me 150$ to order a pizza while i was driving" or something similar?

Cops look at this gesture as an act of aggression, even though you weren't aggressive. In my experience they much prefer to approach you...

I have been pulled over a fair amount in my time... (I used to be a bit of a speed demon , but I've calmed down now...) and I just always pull over, put my 4 way flashers on and gather my license, registration and insurance documents in the few minutes it takes for the officer to get to the side of my car. You know they are going to ask for that stuff anyway, so I just get it ready.

Not illegal yet. It hasn't been passed into law.

Yes it is illegal. The only thing the Minister said is that Police should give citizens a grace period, before charges are laid, in order to get used to the new law.

Handsfree is still legal.

The law has passed 3rd reading and has been given royal assent.

As someone posted, the minister has asked the police to give warnings and "educate" the public. Tickets get handed out in Sept or Oct.

Life lesson number 26. Play nice with LE and you would have been on your way in 3 minutes. More importantly, who was the dancer? Next time, give the phone to her to answer;) (that's what I do).

For years and years Peel Police in Brampton have been hanging out, outside strip joints, in their cruisers and when customer leaves in their car the police follow them around for 1 KM or so to see if they can nail them for some illegal driving infraction.

And, if they can't nail you for some driving flaw they just flat out pull you over anyway to see if you might be drinking and driving, or don't have insurance card on you, or whatever they can find.

It's a fishing expedition and it's been going on for 20 years. They like to nail people who go to strip joints for anything because cops consider strip joint patrons to be erratic/crazy people and the scum of the earth or something. That's my guess.

Guys, he was stopped at the side of the road at night. Cops always stop. When he got out of the car, the cop got nervous. They always do when you jump out of the car. They don't want to get shot.

So he gave you the third degree because you had him worried. He let you go. Next time pull off the road into a parking lot. Better yet, get a bluetooth headset and you are free and clear!

What a few said already..

Don't be stupid and get out of your car. You strangely pulled over at 1am (lets face it, not many would do that for a phone call even though its illegal now) so he wanted to check things out.. I personally see no problem with that.

If you got your documents ready, explained the situation as soon as he got up, it would have gone much smoother.

They were doing their job.

... now if it had been in the middle of the day and you weren't driving with two strippers.. maybe I could see your frustration :)

That's a crock of paranoid BS. They hang around outside of BARS where people DRINK and then get in their CARS and drive home. Not so much in toronto but yes, Brampton and Mississauga.

Frankly I am thankful they do. I don't know how many people they stop for DUI but if it's one a night, that's enough..........

All I can say is I've driven down Steeles Avenue past Melanie Court a million times at night and there used to be a strip joint at Melanie Court and Steeles till it closed down a year ago or so (forget what the place was called) and I've personally seen cops pull patrons of this place over a gazillion times after they pull out. That may be a reason why this strip joint went out of business.
So, I go by what my eyes see. Thats all.

I've only been to strip joints about 3 times in last 10 years; but, before that I used to go twice a month or so and anyway about a dozen years ago I left a strip joint in Brampton after having 1 beer there after work and a cop followed me for 1 km after I left and finally pulled me over to go on a fishing expedition for whatever he could find (nothing) and then I was on my way.

And a similar thing just happened to poster #1 on this thread.

Not so much in Toronto because there are alternatives such as TTC, cabs and walking. Brampton and Sauga are pretty much car country.

Spot on.

Oh, and be nice, they're just doing their job and most of the time dealing with idiots.....

and keep your hands on your steering wheel or up high so the cop can plainly see where your hands ARE!!!
And turn off your engine.

I used to wonder why it took cops so long to approach me after stopping. Then seen it on COPS, they are waiting for you to turn off engine so you don't run on them. They see your hands on the steering wheel they realize your not a threat so they will treat you better and make the stop quicker and ask less questions.

By the way if for any reason you need to carry tools with you, put them in the truck as they will think you just commited a crime with them.
