See fuji? This is another example of your semi distorted view of the world: YOu, a cyclist, with no protection other than a styrofoam helmet, is trying to force a 3000 lbs hunk of steel moving at 50 kph + to do something.

Now let's see, we have tons of threads on here about bad drivers, how do you think THEY will respond to a pissant trying to force them to do anything?

I'd say a flick of the wrist and you're a stain on the pavement. I bet you could lie on your deathbed thinking: I was in the right I was in the right...shit lot of good it will do you.....

That's right, because the alternative to the cyclist controllign the situation is fatal: letting the driver control the situation. The relative costs of a cyclist/car collission are VERY one-sided, the cyclist is the one who has everything to lose, and therefore should maintain control over the situation.

The car driver if given a chance is far more likely to execute behavior that is highly dangerous to the cyclist.

Therefore the cyclist needs to move out into the lane and control it, and then decide when and where, in the opinion of the cyclist, it is safe to allow the car to pass--if allowing the car to pass is even necessary.

In many cases it is not necessary that the car pass the cyclist, but the car driver will attempt it anyway if given a chance, often in a way dangerous to the cyclist.

For example, approaching a stop light, the car driver would pass the cyslist, and then the cyclist would pass the stopped car again--in this case there is no reason for the cyclist to permit the car to pass.

Now let's see, we have tons of threads on here about bad drivers, how do you think THEY will respond to a pissant trying to force them to do anything?
I can answer this one objectively from experience. What they do is honk and yell. Tough titty. I'm not going to put my life in danger just because they're an asshole.

That sort of road rage would lead to an assault charge or murder charge depending on the severity. Fortunately, it's rare.

Honestly, I think they should leave us alone and focus on the retards they give drivers licenses out to. I am quite happy riding on the sidewalk or the paved curb. The cops see me every day at least 4 times a day they do not stop me. I have respect for pedestrians unlike drivers do for me.

Let’s face it tons of metal vs. lbs of aluminum what is more likely to kill someone:rolleyes:

The point you fail to see is: YOU ARE FORCING HIM TO EXECUTE A DANGEROUS MANEUVER by forcing him to move completely into another lane when it isn't necessary to do so. In fact, purposely blocking the flow of traffic will incite dangerous behaviour. I mean, have you ever driven in rush hour traffic on a road without a dedicated bike lane?

....For example, approaching a stop light, the car driver would pass the cyslist, and then the cyclist would pass the stopped car again--in this case there is no reason for the cyclist to permit the car to pass.

Problem with your logic is that the cyclist should remain in the middle of the lane EXCEPT when he wants to break YOUR law (by passing a stopped car). You can't have it both ways: either you take up the same space as a motor vehicle or you don't, not just when it suits you!

Of course it is NOW, the laws prevent bicyclists from doing anything to purposely enrage drivers. Sure, an assault charge may come, or a murder charge but you can rest assured that the person may be punished as you lie dying in the road or look down in the hospital bed to see they've amputated both your legs.

The point is Fuji, and you'll never see it is that while the person might get caught, you WILL be injured. THere is such a thing as being right, and being alive.......I mean seriously, people die in vehicle/vehicle accidents, what will prevent you from dying in a car/bike accident?

Again, as in the other thread, you can't see the forest for the trees......

The same can be said for 200 lbs of flesh and steel vs a pedestrian.....(read back to what happened to my mother from some idiot riding on the sidewalk).

Sorry, if I see an adult riding a bike on a sidewalk and I'm walking? I will either body check them OFF the bike or (as I often do) have a long piece of steel or wood on my person, it will be going in the front spokes.

Vehicles belong on the road, pedestrians on the sidewalk. EOS.

Luv: sorry that you feel that way but when someone driving a VEHICLE who is capable of causing bodily harm to me or any other pedestrian, is operating in a manner that can injure ME, I feel it is within my right to protect myself.

What part of SIDEWALK don't you understand?

As for the cops not ticketing you? That's the problem right there: if they gave you a ticket everytime you DROVE on the sidewalk, I wouldn't feel it necessary to protect myself.

Now you may think I'm an asshole but I have personal first hand experience how someone probably thought they weren't doing anything wrong (like you do) and it resulted in my 55 yr old mother being run down and permanantly injured. In addition, there are lots of small kids in my neighbourhood and more than once I've seen mothers pull them out of the way of almost being run down by an asshole riding on the sidewalk.

Sorry, kids SHOULD feel safe from being run over on the sidewalk and if I lose someone's respect by preventing ONE child from getting run over, well then it is well worth it.

I mean shit people, kids get run over on the street now they have to worry about being on the sidewalk too?

Actually I've been under a three cars in three different intersections when they drove into me. This happenned as a child a teen and an adult. In the first two cases I was legally driving. The third: I was walking my bicycle through an intersection. That is what got me driving on the sidewalk and on people's lawns. I had enough.

I am serious. It's war.

See your problem is you're grouping all bike riders in the same group as the person who ran down your mom. I do not ride on the sidewalk to harm anyone it is in fear for my own life period so leave me out of your rage for the ass that hurt your mom ok.
Now while I do ride on the sidewalk, and or the paved shoulder I do not use them if there is a person old or child walking on them. If I see someone I either stop or if the road is clear of cars, I will go on to the road and pass them. Like I said if I trusted the idiots on the road, I would gladly use it.

When I am on the road, I feel like a squirrel ready to be mowed down.
It is dangerous enough driving a bike in parking lots and most of the cars are parked. Just try riding down a road of moving death traps not caring about anything but them selves.

i am sorry about your mom

See? That's just it, you WOULDN'T get body checked by me cuz you're OFF the sidewalk around me....DOH.....

The problem is: you're right, not everyone is responsible and unfortunately the the poor 20% ruin it for the good ones.

But as I was reading this thread I started to think, why was I so pissed (as if my mom getting hurt isn't enough) but I then remembered I was down on harbourfront one sunday (blading but only at walking speed cuz it was so crowded) and a bike came riding down the sidewalk and right into me....can't believe I forgot about that....DOH (old age I guess). Yeah, they shouldn't have been riding cuz the sidewalk was so crowded but at one point do you say NO? When there's 12 people? 2? 4? 2 adults and 3 kids?

Getting off the sidewalk around pedestrians is the RIGHT thing to do and I applaud you for it.

As for parking lots, ummm, (ducks) you shouldn't be riding in one that is full of cars. It's hard enough for people pulling in and out to see CARS let alone bicycles.

Hey, I agree, you take your life in your hands when you ride on the road, hence why I sold my motorcycle years ago and won't drive in the city anymore. See, cars (for now) are a part of our life, biking places is still optional......

I"m all for (and said repeatedly) that this city needs more dedicated bike lanes and that would solve all the problems (least the one about riding on the sidewalk).

That's wonderful of you to support more bike lanes, but unfortunately the city grid is pretty much laid out. There are only x number of feet from building front to building front. Its all taken up by sidewalk, parked car lane and driving lanes. So when you support more bike lanes, since we can't move the buildings back about a metre and a half on each side, something else has to be taken away...sidewalk space, street parking, or a lane of driving. Which of those do you support reducing by 3 metres to put in a bike lane?

Yeah, I know, and I don't blade on the sidewalk any more....so there lol....I mean, it wasn't like we were even moving more n walking speed, it was that packed.

As for your bike lane: that's the problem right there: 3 metres? Holy shit, how big a bike are you riding? The whole cherry beach/goodman trail isn't half that wide and it's two lanes!!! Most bike lanes in this city are about a metre wide and that is ample for SINGLE FILE riding.

For eg: when they screwed up st clair by putting in the street car only area, they could have easily added a bike lane in each direction. As it is they still kept 2 lanes of traffic (in most sections).

Now in the downtown core it will be a little more trying but in Mississauga and elsewhere where the planners were smart and made the streets 2 miles wide, there's plenty of room.

I could also see a better idea is instead of putting them on major streets (like the danforth) put them 1 block north or south. But as I said before: a GREAT idea would be to dedicate a curb lane for two way traffic in the opposite direction at rush hour. So you have 2 lanes coming into the city in the morning and 2 going out at night. One lane on the opposite side is for 2 way bike traffic (but only during summer months as it'd be a waste when no one is biking). As I said: like jarvis is changed depending on the time. The centre lane is for both directions to use but changes depending on the time. I remember back in the day they used to close off yonge st during the summer from Bloor to Dundas (I think???).......

Good Guess. I've lost count of the bikes I've had stolen. I have only driven hack bikes since I was 12. Dude, thats over 30 years of cycling. $400.00 is the maximum I will spend on a bike and paint gets spilled on the rims as soon as I leave the store.

I agree, I never had a nice looking bicycle. Mine were all made from pieces of others and painted with a brush.

But I was thinking more along the lines of a bike with spikes welded to the frame and on the ends of the brake levers, blades on the ends of the pedals, and a flame thrower mounted to the handle bars heheheheh
