The passenger (not the driver) assaulted the cyclist. Sucker punching someone from behind, while they are straddling a bike, is not really a fair fight.

I consider a sucker punch a real douche bag move. Throwing the first punch is in general a bad move and will land you in court.
The driver seat is on the right in England.

Pulling into the area initiated nothing other than being in the area. The cyclist choosing to be a dickwad and losing control of himself chased down the car and further intimidated the driver, who now feeling threatened decided to defend himself. Good for him.
Already said that the cyclist escalated by chasing the car. However, the driver of the car committed the inital traffic violation and I seriously doubt that the Metropolitan Police, the Crown Prosecution Service or a Jury will see it your way that this was self-defence

Killed? The little girl tough guy was nowhere near the car! The little girl tough thug thought he could intimidate the driver like a tough little girl biker! Guess what asshat? He got punched in the face and ran away! Loved it!!! Tough little girl bikers beware!!

This is not about bikers, it's about little girl tough guys with huge mouths and no spines!

Are you one of these?
I drive and bike both.
Last time I got cut off by a car on bike I took out the cars rear view mirror, got witnesses and prepared to take him to court.

The tough ones don't need a metal box to make them feel strong.
...

Really, I try to de-escalate situations.
But asshats like you in cars make my life on a bike dangerous.

I think this is lost on people, they have hair-trigger umbrage attitudes. Had this conversation with my son yesterday - couple of his friends were suspended for tit-for-tat teenage boy stuff that got out of control. Was a good teaching moment - you are responsible for your behavior regardless of what other people do, you should look for opportunities to de-escalate situations, and if all else fails walk away. The kid almost run over by the minivan in Brooklyn is a good example, he kept his cool when he had every right to deck the dick-head who cut him off and was holding him hostage hoping to provoke him.

Uhhh, yeah, I know. When I watched the video, I wondered how the driver got out given the closeness of the cyclist to the driver's door. Watching again, and reading the text, it is clear the passenger got out and hit the cyclist.

So yeah, it is primarily because they drive on the right it is clear the driver did nothing. The cyclist was sucker punched from behind, while turned the other way straddling a bike.
After the cyclist was hit, the person who hit him, opened and got into the right front door, better known as the driver's door.

If you yell and scream at someone, and then turn you back on them, you are a complete idiot.

- Car drives in a bike lane. Shame on him
- Biker yelled back like an immature kid. Shame on him
- Biker actually peddles as fast as possible to catch up to the car a few blocks down the street at the next light. Shame on him again
- Biker yells at the driver again. Shame on him again
- Driver (or passenger) gets out and punches him. Shame on him again

In summary:

Driver: Shame x2
Biker: Shame x3

Funny thing is I think most of us on this board have been driving for years if not decades. We've done our share of cutting off people or running a red light or stop sign. Same goes for other people. They've done the same. It's happened 100s if not 1,000s of times over 5, 10.... 30 years of driving.

Yet how many of them are so infuriating, you've actually had the mentality to chase someone down at the next light..... or if on the receiving end.... get out and punch a guy? Probably none. Maybe a silly and frustrating thing in those 5 seconds, but all forgotten by now. People need to grow up. How many times have you been at a 4-stop and a guy goes through the stop sign or takes his turn first when he should really wait for the others? Lots. How many people have actually turned their car around and flagged him down for improper stop and go? I bet zero.

Looking at the biker/driver situation, I think the biker is more of an idiot. Simply for trying to bike as fast as possible to catch up to a car to yell at a guy for the second time. Talk about a safety hazard for himself and others. Cars typically get a fender bender. A biker being reckless can get rolled over.

Also, if you watch the video, the car does drive in the bike lane, but you can see he's only partially in it, and is situated where it seems he knows he's there and giving the bikers clearance. He even turns his wheels outwards away from the bike lane as if knows he shouldn't be there to give more bikers space in the lane. No doubt, he shouldn't be there. But no need for the biker to yell or chase him down later.

Talking from experience seeing cyclists in the burbs or downtown (esp. bike couriers), how many have you seen actually use hand signals to tell you if they are turning or stopping? I bet all of us have seen hardly any. And how many bob and weave through traffic or try to whiz past everyone either on the right curb or right on the dotted line as the bike can technically squeeze by? Lots. If there's enough space, even guys on motorcycles sometimes trying to wiz by everyone in traffic by driving on the dotted line. Absurd.

So it goes both way. Drivers can be bad at giving bikers space, fully knowing they got the dominant machine where they won't get hurt if there is an accident. Bikers are bad at poor signalling and bobbing and weaving where drivers have to literally guess what they are trying to do.

The problem with the above, is that it is really:

Cyclist: shame X3 (but nothing criminal)

Automobile occupants: Shame 1, Traffic violation 1, Criminal Assault and Battery 1

It can be argued the biker (when he caught up to the driver) was getting aggressive and provoking. He may have even started tapping his car. If I was driving and had the same guy come at me twice, with the second time yelling and showed aggression to possibly damage my car, I'd do the same.

Car did a sudden turn without signalling into a parking lot, turning right into me.
I leaned into the car and my handlebar took out the passenger side mirror and I did a slow fall onto my ass.
Bruised, but otherwise fine.
Kid was majorly worried after I took photos and got the contact name of another cyclist who saw the whole thing.
But I didn't act aggressively to the kid, just took his info and when it turned out I was fine and he already lost his mirror I let it go.

The only evidence is that the cyclist was yelling at the occupants of the car, there is no evidence of vandalism to the car, if there were this would be a different story.

The cyclist yelling mean things at the occupants of the car (with the exception of "fighting words" which again there is no evidence of), does not provide a legal justification for assaulting said cyclist.
