As you may or may not know I live near the ottawa river parkway now and am looking to get a new bike. I haven't ridden in some years and need a comfortable bike as my tushy for all it's padding doesn't seem to be in the right place.. as well as an old tailbone injury so sitting for long periods of time can hurt.

I won't be doing hills as this is not workout oriented but more for sheer pleasure along the bike path and to get back and forth to downtown.

suggestions for me? I will be going to the bike stores in westboro to ask as well but thought I'd start here to get a variety of opinions.

cheers, Carrie.

My daughter has one of these, she likes it and rides purely for the fun of it.....

lmao! I can certainly sit on your face.. but my legs are too long to also pedal your ears..

well a trip to Westboro cycle shop and the ones I like there are 800 and up and they did have a nifty tricycle! I didn't take any for a test drive... checked out the schwin at Crappy tire and I do like one for 279.. but have much more comparison shopping to do.. keep up the tips fellas. I appreciate it.

cool thanks. I looked at the site and there are 4 stores in Ottawa that carry that one.

I have a feeling I'll end up getting a cheap 10 speed.. unless I'm smitten by something under 300 bucks.

Don't forgot to put some money aside for a decent helmet too. No matter what type of riding you do, protect your noggin.

Carrie, from what you've described, I'm thinkin' you want a cruiser bike. Something you can just use to stroll around town, so you can check out everybody or so they can check you out. =)

Check out this vid as it might be helpful.

I'd recommend checking out different saddles to find the right one for you. And if your ass bothers you that much when on a bike, you may want to consider investing in a suspension seatpost. Don't have much experience with those myself though.

As for price range, I'll agree with what everybody else has said so far. You get what you pay for. I'd recommend staying away from department store bikes as the build quality just isn't the same as one you'd get from a bike shop. I don't think I'll be too helpful with price as I've dropped over $800 on upgrades to my bike so far this year. I think I may have spent more on upgrades than I've actually spent on the bike itself. So if you're looking for something cheap, I'd recommend getting a quality used bike instead of a new department store bike. Kinda like saying I'd rather buy a quality used Toyota vs a new Chrysler.

If you ever consider doing some fast flowing singletrack riding on a cross country or all-mountain bike, let me know and I'll join ya. =)

Nice pic Carrie, but no... this is a suspension seat post:

There are a number of different designs, but they all have the same premise... some sort of shock absorption system in the post.

I was just teasing.. I sat on one of those posts (well not actually the post but the seat with such a post) and loved it.. it was one of the Crappy Tire bikes actually..

They work well. I have one on my bike too. LY when I was buying my new bike, I was replacing a Crappy Tire (Raleigh- Tora) which couldn't take the rigors of the kms I was putting on. It was a dual suspension but the bike tech I was speaking to recommended a hard tail for my style of riding. This was a good compromise. :)
