I like Canadian Tire. They seem to have fair prices and their associates are quite helpful.
Perhaps you just got a bad service dept?
You did the correct thing though going for a 2nd opinion to a trusted source.

So I went to Canadian Tire because I had a slow leak in my tire. I get my tires from there and they were under warranty. It was a valve stem issue so they fixed it.

They said I needed two new front tires and my tires are not under warranty anymore because I didn’t get the tires rotated or something. Whatever.

Then they said I needed an alignment. That the tires wear pattern are different on each tire. $120 for an alignment. Then they said they can only fix the alignment if the suspension is good and a suspension test is like $70. So $200 on top of two new tires if they don’t find a suspension issue.

I said thanks, I will be back and left. I went to my mechanic because of course I have one and an awesome one at that which I have had for over 15 years. He puts the car on the hoist and sure enough, tires are close to the ware-bars on the front but I don’t need an alignment. Wear pattern is identical. Wear is correct and he sees no issues. He says get two new tires and then they will put it on the machine and check the numbers digitally to make sure. All free of charge of course. If the alignment needs to be done, would only be $90.

So now what do I do because I am pissed. Is this a sexist thinking “I am stupid because I’m a woman” thing? Is this just an equally “we will rip off anyone” thing?

I think I will start with the garage manager first but I know he is an asshole because of a previous issue ( I went to get my tires put on, they made me wait an hour after I got there to tell me the tires were not in the store yet (they were ordered in), when I complained to the manager he said I was free to go elsewhere but he didn’t really care because he had bigger issues to deal with) So I don’t think I will get help from him.

I will then go to the store manager directly who will say that it is the garage department and they have no control.

But then what - call corporate I guess???? Should I record the conversations? I’m not a “Karen” and I don’t want to come across as one, but this is a blatant attempt to rip me off and it is not right.

Do I say fuck it and just post all over social media and in reviews?

All of the above?? As a guy - what would you do? And do you think this is a sexist thing? Would they try to pull that shit on you?
Yes…. They tried to rip you off. No, it’s not because you are a woman.

It’s because the service advisors make commissions on upsells. They will tell men and women alike anything and everything to add to the bill. It’s there job to “feel you out” and test your knowledge, to see what they can get away with.

Oil change…. You need a system flush too!

Cooling fluid? System flush as well.

That kind of shit. Any tire issues… alignments.

Bottom line…. Canadian Tire should know better than hiring people that will lie to your face for commissions…. But then the executive bonus’ get paid out and they suddenly could care less.

CT auto repair is and always has been a rip off. Still amazed how many people use them.
Had to use them once because a rad house split and I was literally across the street from them when I was 2 hours from home. They repaired it but of course I needed new tires because mine were old and wearing (they were 1 year old and a quality brand name) because they weren't aligned properly. Asked for the manager and told him, fix the rad hose and told him the so-called "other problems" with my car were a load of BS since the tires were new and properly installed by my mechanic. The manager walked away with this tail between his legs and my car was repaired very quickly. When I got home I did have my mechanic check the repair and he said it was okay. He laughed and shook his head when I told him the story.

1. Never, ever have your vehicle serviced at Canadian Tire. Ever!
2. Never buy tires at Canadian Tire. Much better deals out there. I swear by Sailun tires, summer and winters.
3. Never, ever have your vehicle serviced at Canadian Tire. Ever!
4. Never buy a battery from Canadian Tire. They're the worst. Kirkland brand from Costco are excellent for the price.
5. Never, ever have your vehicle serviced at Canadian Tire. Ever!

Jenesis, don't waste a second of your time complaining to CT. Shaming them on social media is far more effective and satisfying. If nothing else, it may save others from being scammed by those thieves.

All very valid points. Except number 2. Sailun tires are Chinese tires. I wouldn't ever recommend a tire made in China. Spend the money on premium tires regardless of your vehicle. BFG or Michelin or Goodyear. And always check where and when they were manufactured before they are installed on your car. Yes I know that even the top manufacturers make tires in China, but not every model. The BFG's on my truck were made in the States. Goodyear and Bridgstone both make certain tires in Canada.

I always deal with Tirecraft for tires. My local store is great and they have locations in many towns. For repairs I have a good independent mechanic across from me.
Agree 100%. I use them for all my tire and have found them to have the best prices too. If they were closer to where I live, I'd use them as my go to mechanic also.

If you have a trusted mechanic, I'm pretty sure he knows a trusted tire installer...my mechanic is in Markham and I drive all the way from Ajax for anything I need. including tires...i have no problem with CT products but don't trust their mechanics....not because they do a bad job but because they are notorious on upsells....

I wouldn't lump all the Chinese tire manufacturers together. My friend owns a large wholesale tire company and he's vetted the brand. He can put just about any brand of tire on his cars, yet even he chooses Sailun. They've been in business for 21 years and are the only Chinese brand I trust. I've been using both all seasons and winters on my and my wife's car for over 10 years and they just keep getting better. I wouldn't however use them on my track car.

The days when "Made in China" meant cheap crap are over. More and more I am finding that the cheap Chinese products I buy from Amazon are actually very decent quality, often superior or at least on par to the Japanese, Korean, or European brands.

Just don't buy a Chinese made e-bike with a lithium battery. You're asking for trouble. 🔥

It is a Canadian Tire thing. Their mechanics suck. I'm sure those morons actually believed what they told you.
Keep in mind, CT hires mechanics that are either right out of school, or have been fired from everywhere else.

Canadian Tire is shit. Their return policy is a nightmare. I avoid it like a plague.

A friend got his brakes done at CT recently. Two weeks later he went to the same CT garage for additional work and was told he needs brakes done because it was below 20%. He just said yeah, go ahead and change them.
When he went to pay, he refused to pay for the brakes and showed them a receipt from 2 weeks ago. Mechanic who worked on his vehicle did change the brakes. When store manager went to the mechanic, he found 2 weeks old brakes in mechanic's toolbox.

I, personally, bought a tool a few years ago. That tool broke within a month. When I went back to replace it, I was told they won't do that and have to send the tool to a repair shop. 3 weeks later I went to check on the status of repair only to find out it never left the store. So I found out the location of repair shop and took it there myself. 2 weeks later that shop called me and said a company that manufacturers the tool doesn't have replacement parts and gave me a slip so I could return the damn tool for a refund. Finally, back at CT, I had to wait for them to verify everything and only then I got my refund with ZERO apologies.

Fuck Canadian Tire!!! Stay away from it.

Just so I properly understand, it's OK to get your car serviced at CT?

I've had a good mechanic and a bad mechanic at Canadian Tire.
The bad mechanic though a coolant leak was some sort of air conditioner leak.

I believe once upon a time the auto shop at CTC stores were part of the franchise that was granted to the owner operator, now a days it may be a concession that the owner has given to a independents mechanic to operate. This way they have a client for the parts at the back of their store. These days the auto shop tries to nickel and dime the clients to death. A few years ago when I bought a new car I had to buy winter tires. CTC use to give free installation and balancing. Now they rip you off $15 a tire for balancing. I complained to corporate and they refunded me $30 because there were shops at the time advertising winter tire switch overs for $39.95.

The reviews for Sailun tires are good. If they are lower price tor the same or better performance then it is a good deal.

You get what you pay for, iPhone, iPads and iMac computers are made in China. As well as Canon and Nikon Cameras. Even some Seiko watches are made in China now. As far as Sailun Tires go, if they rate as well as a Canadian Tire or brand name tire at a lower price why not save a few bucks. Keeping in minds that it is a daily driver tire and not a winter high performance tire.
