On the other hand, his Mitch Ryder medley from "No Nukes" is stellar, as is his cover of Trapped.

IMO Landslide by the Dixie Chicks sounds too similar to the Fleetwood version, but I do like it. Manfred vs. Springsteen, two excellent versions of an excellent song. I really like the Stereophonics version of Sinead's Nothing Compares 2 U and BNL version of Lovers in a Dangerous Time.

My favourite cover of all time is the one Nirvana did of Lake of Fire on their MTV Unplugged album.

I thought Ozzy did a good job with "Mississippi Queen", originally by Mountain, I think.
oops we lock horns again....that desicration by OO of a great song ranks right up there with the horrid destruction of J Frank Wilson,s "Last Kiss"'by Pearl Jam

How about Japans version of "all tomorrows parties". That song still gives me the tingles.
I dig Japan's take on - I second that emotion ( Smokey Robinson )

Some of the better covers are:

Rusty Cage - Johnny Cash covers Soundgarden
The Ghost of Tom Joad - Rage Against the Machine covers Bruce Springsteen
Planet Caravan - Pantera covers Black Sabbath
Whisky in a Jar - Metallica covers Thin Lizzy

Anyone's version of "Louie Louie" is better then the original.
by the "original" do you mean the !956 song written and performed by a RnB artist named Richard Berry...or the most popular version of Mr Berry,s song done by the Kingsmen in 1965?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I just thought of another one - Lou Reed did a great cover of "This Magic Moment". Not sure who did the original? (I could google it but I'm being lazy).

Everyone knows Bob Marley's War, itself an adaptation of a speech by Ras Tafari, the Lion of Judah, the Emperor of Babylon. Much, much better versions are by Alpha Blondy in french (La Guerre) and the best cover I think is by Luciano - partly spoken, shouted, rapped and sung.

Other's I think are awesome covers:

Hey Joe by Ice T and Body Count
Rock El Casbah by Rachid Taha
Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Saint Etienne

comparing any of these covers to the originals in a favourable light would be like comparing hamburger to sirloin

Regretfully I agree. Manfredd Mann did an awesome job on this tune. It's surprising to know though how many people have no idea Bruce and the E Street Band recorded this in the 70's.

There's a group called Nouveau Vague that does downtempo cover songs from the '80s. Songs from Echo and the Bunnymen, Visage, The Clash, Modern English, A Flock of Seagulls, etc...
