Hey, the Boston fire sale is continuing, now captain Joe Thornton looks like he wants to write his own ticket out of Beantown.
Just days after Thornton signed a hockey contract for HC Davos of the Swiss League, reports have surfaced Thornton has sold his Boston-area condo.
Coupled with his rumoured demands for a trade, this is interesting. The Swiss contract can reportedly be broken if the NHL does not have a labour stoppage, but keep in mind Thornton is the first NHLer to sign in Europe. You'd have thought a player like Peter Forsberg or Jaromir Jagr would have been the first ones.
Seems like Joe is sending the Bruins a message that he ain't a happy puppy.
In lieu of this, I think the Leafs should try and pry the 1997 first overall pick out of Boston. What would it take to do it? Definately some cheap talent, as Bruin owner Jeremy Jacobs is about as tight as ol' Harold Ballard was for our poor Leafs.
I suggest the Leafs send Boston young centre Matt Stajan, winger Darcy Tucker, and defence prospect Brendan Bell, as well as their first round pick in 2005 for Thornton.
Those that follow the Leafs may attack me for suggesting a deal of Tucker and Stajan, but, as the saying goes, you gotta give up something to get something. Besides, Stajan played rarely in the playoffs this spring, and Thornton is a centre to take Stajan's spot on the depth chart. Tucker is a great player with tremendous energy, but is rather affordable and a player Boston might covet.
The Leafs could sign a free-agent winger to replace Tucker -- (maybe Thornton's old linemate Glen Murray, eh?). Brendan Bell is one of the Leafs' many young defencemen and not their best -- that would be Carlo Colaiacovo, a player Toronto should not part with if possible. The first round pick is a shot in the dark for the perennial 100-point Leafs, probably anywhere from #24-30, which a decade ago was an early second round pick.
So there you have it, I'd be interested in any other opinions out there...
