Hey, the Boston fire sale is continuing, now captain Joe Thornton looks like he wants to write his own ticket out of Beantown.

Just days after Thornton signed a hockey contract for HC Davos of the Swiss League, reports have surfaced Thornton has sold his Boston-area condo.

Coupled with his rumoured demands for a trade, this is interesting. The Swiss contract can reportedly be broken if the NHL does not have a labour stoppage, but keep in mind Thornton is the first NHLer to sign in Europe. You'd have thought a player like Peter Forsberg or Jaromir Jagr would have been the first ones.

Seems like Joe is sending the Bruins a message that he ain't a happy puppy.

In lieu of this, I think the Leafs should try and pry the 1997 first overall pick out of Boston. What would it take to do it? Definately some cheap talent, as Bruin owner Jeremy Jacobs is about as tight as ol' Harold Ballard was for our poor Leafs.

I suggest the Leafs send Boston young centre Matt Stajan, winger Darcy Tucker, and defence prospect Brendan Bell, as well as their first round pick in 2005 for Thornton.

Those that follow the Leafs may attack me for suggesting a deal of Tucker and Stajan, but, as the saying goes, you gotta give up something to get something. Besides, Stajan played rarely in the playoffs this spring, and Thornton is a centre to take Stajan's spot on the depth chart. Tucker is a great player with tremendous energy, but is rather affordable and a player Boston might covet.

The Leafs could sign a free-agent winger to replace Tucker -- (maybe Thornton's old linemate Glen Murray, eh?). Brendan Bell is one of the Leafs' many young defencemen and not their best -- that would be Carlo Colaiacovo, a player Toronto should not part with if possible. The first round pick is a shot in the dark for the perennial 100-point Leafs, probably anywhere from #24-30, which a decade ago was an early second round pick.

So there you have it, I'd be interested in any other opinions out there...

Sorry Tommy,
I'd love to see Thornton in blue and white but Boston can get a lot more for Thornton than a third line player (Tucker), two unproven prospects (Stajan and Bell) and a draft pick.
Boston will move Thornton for young, cheap, but proven NHL players.
The Leafs have boatloads of money to spend on free agents, but the trade route requires a currency the Leafs are very poor in: young NHL calibre players and blue chip prospects.
As a result, you can forget Thornton or Iginla ever in Toronto unless they come in a 3-way deal from the Islanders first, where there's no limit on Mike Milbury's incompetence.

an even trade for Thornton would be a Sundin + a second line player ... we are talking Thornton here!

Not intending to refute the thrust of your post but once a player is a proven NHL'er he's most likely not going to be cheap anymore. Young and cheap go well together but throwing in proven makes for a small list (especially if you've got to try to get them from one team).

Thornton isn't going anywhwere. Sundin for Thornton? Boston wouldn't go for it, Mats makes $8mill and is 32, too old and too rich for the Bruins. Tucker, Stajan, Bell and a draft pick? The Leafs would jump at that, but Boston would fall on the floor laughing if Fergie ever proposed that one!! It would take a boatload of young talent to get Joe Thornton, only a team like Florida (Weiss, Horton,Bowmeister etc) and Ottawa have the young talent ....Spezza would have to be included. Anyway, Boston is waiting for the chips in the CBA to fall, there are hundreds of free agents available......be patient Bruin fans.

I agree with Coach. It would have to be a deal similar to the Yashin deal when he got dealt to the Islanders. Senators really cashed in on that one.

yeah, what coach is saying makes alot of sense... why do the leaf fans think they always got the great trade in mind... the leafs talent value is dwindling by the day because of the average age of the players, especially the more notable ones... also, these leaf players, though great in their own respect, are all injury prone now and i am sure that plays into what they are worth- which is alot less than what they get paid...

Coach is close. The only thing missing is the team that wants to acquire him would have to be able re-sign him as well.
In the end he has very little leverage and will stay in Boston.
Believe it or not, Toronto is not automatically granted first choice of every player who is or may be on the market.

Listening in on the Leafs' phone:

Mike O'Connell (Bruins GM): "Hello"

John Ferguson (Leafs' GM): "Hi Mike, it's John Ferguson here, have I got a deal for you!"

O'Connell: "Oh yeah? Let's here it."

Ferguson: "I'll take that Thornton kid off your hands, for let's say... oh, hell, I dunno.... Stajan, Bell, Tucker... and just cause I like you, I'll throw in a 1st rounder."

O'Connell: "Fergie, I think you took too many lumps to the head in your playing days with the Habs."

Ferguson: "No, no. That's my Da..."

He's cut off by O'Connell hanging up on him, but determined, he calls back.

O'Connell: "Hello"

Ferguson: "Okay, Mike, you didn't like that one, how about Mats Sundin PLUS, get this, you can have any 2nd liner you want, so that's my only true 1st liner and a 2nd liner.... hello? Mike, you there? Hello? Mike? Helllllllllloooooooooo?... Dammit! I should've thrown in Vince Carter."

By the way gents, another wrench in Thornton to Toronto fantasy is that the Bruins would never trade him to a division rival.

lol love that blah blah. Your right thornton coming here now wont happen. Trading Sundin now? lmao funny. Ferguson so far has done a pretty good job IMO. according to the poll which im sure all the Sens fans voted for was that he would end up in the nations capital and maybe it could happen then again Ottawa is another division rival!

Too bad Francis didnt play like he did when he wont the cup with the Pens. Leetch IMO has done his job on defense for the leafs. My guess is he will retire a maple leaf! As many people have said the Leafs need some younger legs on the ice. Let's hope Fergie agrees with us! lol

younger legs

It won't happen in a significant way so long as Quinn is coach.
He is loyal tothe veterans and very much wants to win a Cup to go along with the Olympics in order to cement his reputation/legacy.
JFJ has been taking steps to upgrade the scouting dept. but this will not pay off for several seasons, especially if they continue to trade picks for veteran players at the deadline.
