I have been following this tourney along with the U20 from the beginning and now that the later stages have arrived and most of the teams have been eliminated I figured that I would start a thread to see if there was any interest or I am trying to get the other soccer goons away from the transfer thread.

Well it is down to the Semi-finals

Brasil vs. Uruguay - Tuesday July 10
Argentina vs. Mexico - Wednesday July 11

I am a big fan of Brasil, so I take them over Uruguay ... even though they were shaky at the start I think that they have melded together enough to take it.

I am also fan of Argentina, with their lineup who wouldn't be, and favor them over Mexico who looked solid.

So what are your thoughts ...

Oh, btw before I forget ...

Ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brasil are so lucky to not be playing Mexico again. Argentina have a great chance this year but they do so every Copa America and seem to just get burnt.
Don't be fooled by Uruguay....this team is stacked with talent and i think that minor slip against Peru was just a nice wake up call for them. Brasil right now seem to rely too much on Robinho, i don't like that. I think Uruguay will be extremely competitive and i won't be suprised if they beat Brasil.
I'd say Argentina vs Uruguay Finals.
also note how in 2004 we have 3 teams who are in the semi's again.

Yes, it has been an interesting couple of weeks of great soccer.

And I have enjoyed the contrast in styles between the varied, fast paced under 20's and the Latin American jogo bonito...

In these tournaments it is always the teams that build up momentum as they go along that play in the finals.

Argentina has been surging; yesterday they devastated a very sound Peruvian defence, and their momentum visibly surged with their first goal.

[So did the colour commentator's GOL!!! call... went to refrigerator after he started, and when I came back he was till holding out strong! ;) Man, what lungs!]

Brazil was impressive against Chile but Chile did not play well... I don't know if they have caught fire yet...

I don't think Mexico has enough guns to outlast Argentina... and I haven't a clue what's going on with Uruguay. Their 1-1-1 group record was hardly impressive.

So it looks like an Argentina and Brazil final to me... unless, of course, Uruguay surprises. And predicting who will win that depends on what we see in the semi's.

But here's hoping the final is a 3-2 game rather than 1-0 or a shootout after a 0-0 game.

I have followed the last four copas and this has been by far the best one I've seen yet! Three things have stood out for me in this copa.

1)The number of goals we've had. In the last round alone the average number of goals per game was 5! That is a lot even in South America where it's all about going forward.

2) The gap between the good teams and the second tier teams in South America is widening more so every day. A few years ago it was rare that an Argentina or Brazil would kill another South American team by more than two goals.

3) Riquelme. He scores, he makes elegant plays and he outshines Messi. He's finally becoming the player for Argentina that he should have been at the big stage last year. Villarreal might just change their mind about letting him go.

The semi finals are gonna be fantastic. Brazil vs Uruguay is a South American classic. I don't expect a cakewalk for Brazil like their last game, but I think they will win. 2-1 Brazil. Mexico will be looking to avenge last year's WC elimination at the hands of Maxi Rodrigues ( where the hell is he by the way?) . This should be a close game. Mexico will attack Argentina like no other team has in this tournament, but I have total faith in Ayala who is a general at the back. With Mexico attacking Argentina I also think Messi will finally have a bit more space to work his magic and score the type of goal he's wanted to do this whole cup. Argentina wins 2-0.

Final Brazil vs Argentina. Let's face this is Robinho plus ten and they've not been good at this cup, they've only made it this far because of who they've faced. Brazil's C team is good enough to test Argentina's A team, but not enough to beat them. Argentina avenges last Copa's penalty shootout heartbreak and becomes champ of the western hemisphere.

Glad that I have PIP or else I would be missing a lot more than I/we already am/are ...

What I have to complain about is local coverage ... the free preview of U20 games on GolTV and CBC Country Canada on channel 59, and CH. 1 if you had the box, for most veiwers was short lived and the regular CBC coverage just sucked ... where were all the games and why were some of them aired or repeated late at night ??? TLN covered most of the Copa and still had time to air U20 games and that was ONE channel. I have a box and I get all the channels I could want with the previews but many of us don't and miss out on the games because they decide to air the WFN freebie ... WTF.

I won't even get into the fact that the CBC website hadn't updated the U20 results and standings on their website on a real time basis when I went to go check it out.

Don't you mean Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriquelme ... this is Copa !!!

Definately ... he shines on the field. He is playing for pride as many of the teams are and wants to make a statement this year, you can see it every time he is on the pitch. I don't think he was happy at the yellow submarine and feels more at home back in Argentina.

yeah the comparison in coverage of the CBC and TLN is absurd, do the cable companies really expect us to subscribe to CBC Country Canada, what is the purpose of that channel anyway, but I guess TLN has years of experience of catering to a knowledgeable Latino and Italian soccer crowd, thats why they are better.

Pretty good game...exciting shootout as well.

Forlan's PK was terrible, as was the last one Uruguay missed.

The PK taken by Abreu to tie at 4-4 was quite ball-sy though.

anyone think those Latino announcers just talk waaaaaaaaaay too much during the game, its non stop babbling for 90 minutes, this is why I prefer the Brits they let the game speak for itself, my Spanish is pretty good, but ya dont need to constantly tell me every single little detail about how they last won the Copa America in 1953, and tell me what Dunga said yesterday about the game

The purpose of the new CBC channel is the same as the old CBC channel ... to bring overpriced sub-standard material of a Canadian content while teh taxpayers foot the bill.

... my only arguement is ... Inter .. I mean ... Italian Soccer Fanatics ... so I guess the Latin is covered. LOL.

Kidding aside Alf is great along with his English sidekick during Serie A broadcasts and the U20 commentary was great when they broadcast with Italian and Portuguese side by side ... IMO, that showed some class.

The only commentary I wait for is the GOL !!!!

Soccer is about space, same with the commentary ... the Brits allow more space in between but the Latino's ... they love everything filled in.

Besides during the breaks when the camera man focuses in on those hot mamasitta's in the stands ... Aye Carumba !!!

You take the good with the bad.

Dif'rent strokes for dif'rent folks!

I enjoy the banter... lots of useful info along with the boring shit... just turn the volume down to keep the shit from stinking too much! ;)

And I thought last night's game was entertaining, but not the caliber of futbol I expect from the Copa.

Brazil started well and it looked like it was going to be a great game, but when the lights went out, so did the energy... actually, they were fortunate to win... if they play like that against Argentina (assuming they win tonight, of course) they will get creamed by Rrrrrrrrriquelme, Messi, el pupi et al...

Ah yes the shots of mamasitas in the stands shaking their goodies I have absolutely no objection to :D

the comparison to filling space is a great one, and yeah the Brits dont really need it while others do, the Latinos arent the only culprits, the Arabs are just as bad, during the World Cup the announcer would tell you about the house that Wayne Rooney bought in London etc etc etc

The Chicas Rule !!!

I still have visions of that hot busty brunette from last week. When she turns slightly towards the camera and gives ME a smile ... a need to find an SP/MPA that looks like that then I will be the one smiling.

I went to SRM yesterday and met Sasha. She is one sizzling chica. She has that nice local Latin look that you see in those stands. I am kicking myself for choosing the other girl that was available.

Review ???

Well ... the USA v Uraguay game was nice, I missed the first half of the Argentina v Poland game yesterday due to an early start but it was a good game as well. I figure that devoting a thread to that final will be forthcoming now that it is final 8.

On to Copa ...

Mexico losses but has a chance to gain 3rd place on Saturday vs. Uruguay at 5 pm. I heard that Marquez will not play the game citing fatigue or perhaps the wednesday signing of Gabrial Milito (Argentina/Zaragosa) by Barca could mean an end to his days there, who knows.

Argentina v Brazil ... this Sunday at 5 pm ... my pic is Argentina, they look unstopable at the moment but you never know.

can someone explain to me this tradition that some central and South American teams of when they lose a game at the end they start a massive brawl, happened in the Brazil Uruguay game, again in the U-20 Uruguay USA, and who can forget last years WC between Germany and Argentina
